Contact Managing Partner, Judgement Call?

I spoke to a Junior Partner at a mega-fund this morning who had told me they were in late stages of recruiting and just about ready to extend offers. But we still spoke for a bit and he re-iterated that they are in late stages but send over my resume anyway, which I did.

However, I just now came to the realization that the managing partner is an alum of my school. At the risk of seeming like I'm trying to go over the Jr Partner (which I kind of am), should I reach out to the Managing Partner? I mean the other guy very clearly said how late in the process they are, so obviously short of someone pretty high-up going to bat for me, I'm not getting a shot at an interview... should I just go for it?

Any advice? Kind of sucks because Im not from H/Y/S, so this is clearly the ONLY mega-fund managing partner who is an alum of the same school as me.

I have no experience in this, but just an idea.

Perhaps email or call the managing director, following initial pleasantries and banter about your school clearly state that you have been talking to jr. partner ____ and that you have talked to the jr. partner about xyz topics. Then ask something specifically tailored to the managing director, what he does, his angle on things, or something about the firm so that there is added purpose to your phone call specifically concerning him (aside from your alma mater). Eventually ask whether it is too late in the process to be considered. By the end thank him for his time, reiterate that you are interested in possible opportunities at the firm and would like to keep in contact with both jr. partner ___ and him.

From there I assume either he won't do anything, due to being unable to or unwilling to so late in the process, or ask you to send your resume to him specifically or recommend your already submitted resume along with the jr. partner.

Well, I am just an SA, so take the following with that in mind. However, some fresh perspective might be useful.

What I would do:

Contact the alum. From what I remember in your previous posts, you have a cool background (if I remember correctly, aside from your IB job, you are doing a PE deal for a family friend?). That being said, the alum would probably be excited to find someone from the same school who has a background that meets the firm's standards (I'm sure you figured this).

You don't want to damage the relationship with the Jr. Partner either, so I would mention in your communication with the alum that you have spoken with the JP about the firm. In fact, mentioning that could provide a nice bridge to introducing yourself to him. Along the lines of, "I have been in talks with X about the firm, and he has had me send my resume. Having looked further into the firm, I was pleased to find a fellow graduate from X." Then move on with the e-mail. That way, the MP knows you have a resume floating around, and that if the MP goes to talk to the JP, the JP knows you mentioned him.

That is just what I would do, and why. Hopefully more experienced people reply. Good luck.

Edit: looks like Putz offered a similar take.
