Contacting an old prof for interview/job advice/contacts

I am planning on applying to a consulting firm's new grad development program and one of my profs used to work for the firm and I got along really well with the prof. Is it safe to email him and tell him I'm applying to the program and ask for tips and/or if he still has contacts in the company that may be able to give me some insight on landing an interview? Is it too much to ask? Please advice monkeysss
