Coolest on-campus job you've had or heard of?
Hi guys,
I'm a junior at an East Coast state school who just finished navigating the nontarget IB recruiting process -- I was fortunate enough to secure an SA offer at an elite boutique and will be starting in June. The issue is that my savings from last summer are drying up and I need income to support myself until the internship starts in June. What are some interesting part-time jobs available to college students, beyond being a TA or working at Chipotle? Don't mean to suggest there's something wrong with either aforementioned job, I'm just hoping for suggestions that are slightly off the beaten path.
Best,

Walrus hunter.
On-Campus intelligence officer for a certain undefined intelligence agency running intelligence gathering operations on suspects of a undefined opposing country.
That would be pretty badass but I'm a pacifist
You know, Dude, I myself dabbled in pacifism once. Not in 'Nam of course...
until the zombies come you fuck
Are you 21? You're at the stage of your life where becoming a bartener is 'cool' you get good money and meet lots of chicks.
People don't seem to realize how difficult it is to become a bartender at a moderately popular bar without tits.
You gotta know someone or be a barback for like a year.
I don't turn 21 until June, but I've heard that you only need to be 18 to be a bartender here
Begging
Easy money: get that cool $300 per month https://cops.usdoj.gov/html/cd_rom/inaction1/pubs/Panhandling.pdf
I don't know if you're good at writing, but I write study guides for SparkNotes and get paid about $500 for every one I write. I don't know if I'd call this job cool though.. it's actually pretty exhausting.
How long do you usually take to write one?
Usually it takes me at least a few weeks to write, since I have so much going on in real life too. And then I send it in for revisions, and do some editing before getting paid.
And I haven't found most of the books I've assigned to be that interesting (they're mostly cliché, obscure romantic novels), which can make the whole process pretty grueling.
I was a private language coach & teacher. Was a good job while I had the time (no thesis or difficult exams to prep for) and met really interesting folks. At one point I even had a small class.
other jobs I had during university: waiter (high tips), bartender (lower tips than waiter in my case), croupier (good tips, but tronc is shared), ebay powerseller, car mechanic, PC fixing service, cell phone unlocking services (back when it was possible with a simple data cable and software), coding software at the end but then had professional jobs
Bartending is something I would try my hand at if I were you. You'll learn a bit, meet hot chicks, and more importantly, learn the art of self-control.
@Lloyd BIankfein" prefers to work at PORNHUB in a SEX DUNGEON!
there are no cool on-campus jobs. get an internship
I was student government president and got a salary for the position. It was pretty cool, as I would have done everything I did with the position anyhow if I did not get a salary.
I also wrote articles for websites targeting college kids and got paid $25-$50 per article. Often these were dumb and didn't take longer than 20 minutes. Still easy to make a lot of money while hungover or bored in class.
Ideally you want to leverage this for more than just cash.
Here's two avenues I'd suggest. First one, get a job at somewhere like a golf club that's great for networking. You'd be surprised how handy some of those connections come in handy later (secondhand knowledge, I don't play golf myself).
Other option is find something that will teach some soft skills. Bartending has been mentioned, but also don't overlook just getting a weekend job you can start now at a local car dealership or something. Sales experience is useful no matter what business you go into and this will be doubly true for something client facing like IB. Even if they don't train you're still more or less getting paid a stipend to practice your rap.
Try looking for some hourly temp work. When I was in undergrad I basically did some temp administrative work for a local consultant paid on an hourly basis. It was hooked up through my college career center (semi target right outside of a major city). I'd get paid $15/hour or so to do expense reports, organize files, scan and annotate documents, etc. It was good prep for lots of the mundane parts of ib and decent money.
Because you asked about "on-campus" jobs..
I had a job freshman through sophomore year working as the assistant to the assistant to the Dean of the School of Management. It was a cool job, did my homework at work and met a ton of professors before ever taking their classes which was great for brownie points early on in the semester with professors. I did get this through FAFSA financial aid as a student worker position, made $10 hr flexible schedule. Summers I did internships and eventually quit to intern at other financial firms throughout the school year.
I worked at a ticket booth for some event presales. I never worked at the actual games since I preferred to tailgate, but the booth was great since we just sat there and played on the computer. I studied most of the times with netflix on the background.
Notable mention is lifeguard. Nothing better than watching the hunnies through the shades while trying to flex the entire shift. ;)
The guys at my school who make the most money are the ones who start their own business to fill a whole on campus. Do independent delivery for a restaurant. Or run an overnight laundry/dry cleaning service. Deliver mail. Handle rides to the airport. Etc.
Love your username dude; best most people on the site don't get the reference
Lol count me as one of the few that do, my favorite show
i was a photographer at high school dances on the weekends (my brother got me the job). paid $27/hr, not bad
I used a food delivery app to make easy money. You just post that you're going somewhere and people can send you orders that you want. Probably made $20-30 / hour.
I'm kind of envious of the interns at a startup I'm a part of - they work on their own time and remotely for a biweekly stipend throughout the school year.
My buddy did promotion for a UHaul rent-a-car thing. Dude got $12/hr for 15hrs a week and basically hung a couple posters around campus every couple of months!
Zamboni driver
When I was at NYU, a few girls were sugar babies on the side, mainly Friday/Saturday nights. You'd see them get picked up by guys in Ferraris, S8s, S63s, etc.
Not a bad gig considering the effort/reward ratio, although not quite the definition of an "on campus" job.
more of an 'off-campus' job really
I've held some really cool jobs, being a TA, doing research etc. but (and I'll say this erring on the side of sounding like a complete douche) the best job I had was bartending at my fraternity.
Hands down the easiest way to meet people at a large university, and literally everyone loves the bartender. You pour some drinks, you drink some drinks, you invite a female bar back behind the bar to assist you.
Oh lord, I'm reminiscing about college... someone please stop me!
If you live in an affluent area I would tutor middle/high school kids at private schools. I live in minor US city think Mobile, San Antonio, etc size & can make $40/hr.
I can give you a remote job that pays well and looks good on a resume if you're up to it. I want to help- I know what it's like to be in your shoes. PM me. You'll need a secure or private internet access and you have to be a U.S. citizen (sorry if that is not you).
Are we selling Cutco knives over the internet now?
No, but clever joke- I'm sure you came up with it on your own. For the record- My buddy is the Director of a major LevFin group and his first job was selling cutco knives. Don't knock the hustle schmuck.
Apply for openings at the most popular bar on campus. Ideally, try to become a bartender.
Hours will suck, your friends will be getting hammered while you're essentially a salaried pledge, but at least you will make a killing in tips. Since you've locked down a SA job, classes frankly don't matter anymore - so you don't need to devote your nights to studying / grinding it out on the recruiting circuit.
Plus, you will come away with fascinating stories to relate in the future (fodder for future networking purposes)
I was an energy drink rep in college. Awesome job that pays well and requires minimal effort. I would attend greek parties and sports events, pass out a few cases and take some pictures. If you are social and have a broad campus network (greek life helps here), this is one of the better gigs you can get. Not to mention all of the energy drinks/chasers you need.
My friend was a rep for Rockstar energy drinks in college. It was the best gig ever. They just sent him a bunch of cases and free stuff and his only job was to party hard and take pictures with the Rockstar gear.
I had a few on-campus jobs. Some were cool, some sucked. Ones I had were:
Honestly the campus tech support kids had the coolest jobs. They would find all kinds on porn on professors' computers, and they would take materials from shitty old PCs to throw together Frankenstein "computers" made out of decade-old parts with 32 gb of ram and graphics cards out of old macs. These pieces of shit could play Skyrim on full resolution.
