Deloitte S&O vs. Top Game Publisher vs. Goog

Hi,

Graduated out of top 40 undergrad few years back, 3.6 GPA, landed a job for one of top game publishers as an associate level in biz dev / corp stratgy.

I eventually want to get into a top tier b-school (top 5, 3-4 years maybe) and want to strengthen my resume up a bit.

I have a career choice to make now between

1) Deloitte S&O group
2) A lateral move to a higher ranked game publisher
3) Google's product associate position

I figure I already have 3 years under my belt and want to be more aggressive.

Looking for a gig that will give me the best shot at a top MBA program as well as a more hollistic learning experience.

Let me know your thoughts, I can elaborate if needed.

Just my two cents, but if you're not going to MBB why bother going to consulting to get to business school? Your background is unique enough when applying that you'll probably get a second look anyways, and Deloitte isn't THAT great at getting people into top 5 (not bashing Deloitte, I just don't think it offers a huge boost to someone with your background).

If I were you, I'd continue the non-trad track; if the gaming co. job offers the opportunity to display leadership and interest in biz, do that. otherwise, do Google. Either way, you get credit for not being a standard candidate, and given the way business is swinging you'll be coming out of a hot industry whether it's gaming or tech.

bleedblue - thanks for the quick and thoughtful response.

i guess my biggest reason for return to consulting would be that i miss the excitement & the energy. i can see how this won't necessarily help my case for b-school and if anything could prolong the process.

would you recommend that I just go ahead, hold off where i am and apply this year (will have 3 years, 4 years upon admission) or look into building more exp before shooting for the top schools.

Google has a great relationship with top business schools and would definitely position you well. Google hires a lot of their MBA students and therefore its a circular relationship. I'd vote to go with Google.

That said, I used to dream about working for Blizzard ever since the original Starcraft launch more than 10 years ago. This could be a lot more exciting job and at least make you happy in the near term.

The GOOG is one of the few tech companies that will really, really make a techie's resume shine. They are known as having a competitive hiring process, and are essentially the BB, MBB of the tech world. Great brand name and you'd have an excellent opportunity to be involved in some innovative technology.

My take on the game publishers is this: You think they'd be fun to work for. They are not. (With the possible exception being the Blizzard division of ATVI)

Assuming you're in the Bay Area now, maybe TTWO's 2K, and would end up at ERTS. Or maybe you're at THQ in LA and want to go work for ATVI.

EA has had numerous problems and it has been one reorg after another. There is tremendous pressure internal to that organization to become operationally efficient. ATVI has done much better, but their star might be falling. They rely heavily on three huge franchises: World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and Guitar Hero. GH is plummeting to earth, and WOW may have peaked.

I don't know shit about Deloitte but I do know that it's not MBB and won't have the same impact on your bschool app.

many thanks for your insights everyone - what are your thoughts on this position.
