Discuss with manager frustrations?

Hey guys wasn’t sure where to put this but figured here. FYI I am in CRE but figured here I can get some more responses for general advice.

Been at my role for around a year now as analyst and it’s basically becoming mainly
Administrative. I also rarely get many emails and out of the loop on most communication I feel I should be. I am the only analyst with no one else on my team. I do not like the company and I am looking for a new job regardless however I do want to make the best of it and learn as much as possible. I pretty much had it and want to discuss professionally with my manager my concerns. I don’t want to come off as whiny or giving a list of issues. Just want him to know I want to help and learn as much as possible.

I realize this can be a slippery slope however I want to learn as much as possible and advance my career.

I like your rationale and I think you’re being very reasonable. Most of all, you’re right, it’s basically impossible to not come off as “whiny” in this scenario.

So why say anything? You’re looking for a new job anyways and a true man conducts all their moves in silence. Just do you - find your next move, get all that paperwork squared away and then just give your notice and leave. There’s nothing to win by venting your frustrations, so just let that be and focus on the job search. Yes, I know that talking it out may make you feel better, but again, nothing to really win there, leave it alone.

Good points and thanks for the responses.

I agree now thinking about it. Top on my list of wanting to leave is the culture so more job duties probably wouldn’t change me wanting to leave. If I ver out my frustrations he’ll put two and two together and it’ll become obvious when I step out for interviews and such. I’ll just continue to pluck away and find another opportunity.

It’s just really frustrated to have a manager that just completely ignores you 90% of the time. I’m not saying I need my hand held but I have no one else on my team and it’s tough for me to find things to do or to learn.

I have some contacts from networking I keep in touch with. I’m going to schedule some coffee/lunch with them. How do I let them know I’m unhappy without obviously saying it like that? Do I ask them to connect me with anyone they know hiring?

You don't have to necessary complain, but it's always good to get feedback.

In this case, if you can't get feedback, or don't think your manager will properly communication their issues, as least take a minute to do a self analysis. Meaning, what did you learn about staying in the loop at work, and how can you avoid that situation going forward. Was it an attitude problem? Did your manager just suck? Did communication break down? Should have you done something else or displayed more skill?

Definitely helps to realize that shit rolls down hill, and sometimes the low man on the totem pole has to deal with the shit, but you also deserve to be in a role where you are learning.

I feel your pain though, I've been in situations like that. I had a manager once who wanted an associate under him, but just really needed an admin. He was kinda crazy, and really tough to please because he didn't stay consistent in what he wanted (for example, one earnings report for Company X he wanted GAAP numbers, then the next quarter he wanted non-GAAP numbers w/o explanation).

Really just comes down to sometimes managers don't know how to manage or develop talent, because they're not really mangers, they're just people who are good in their prior position so they were appointed.

To be honest, my manager just simply sucks. He's a smart guy, but just has so much on his plate and he doesn't have the time for an Analyst. Thank God he is actually a nice guy though or this would be a nightmare.

I really also feel there is simply not a need for me. This is a new position and I often feel im just reinventing the wheel on things that are already being done by say Accounting. The job has really become just administrative like I mentioned and it has always been just basically ad-hoc requests from him.

Look man, you're going to have to pick up your balls on this one. No one wants to be invited for coffee to hear someone else moan. Are you looking for a therapy session or are you looking for your network to help you find a job???

Just be upbeat, smile when you pay for their meal and tell them that you'd love to work for them. Why do you need to make it more complex than that - your network is not there for you to gripe to them.
