Does family hire family?

My uncle has been running a 10bln fund for a few years and I’m 2 years out of school working in FI sales at a not top bank (Oppenheimer, William Blair, piper sandler). Almost everyone who works for him is ivy and BB.

Quality of our relationship aside (which is fine), would you assume family hires family? Would he be a d1ck not to find a spot for me or is it understandable that you need to be a certain caliber to work at a fund.

I would not assume anything. I would, however, ask him how you should think about a place for you at his fund.

I know of a few funds where the principals' sons are involved in less rigorous roles. I also have friends with circumstances similar to yours who have been told they have no place in the businesses in question. But really, it depends on who your uncle is.

TLDR -- Go ask him.
