Does my target school undergrad still count for something at this point?

I graduated 4 yrs ago from a target school at a half level below HYP + Wharton (think Columbia, UChicago, UPenn non Wharton) and have been working at a F100 Company as a Data Scientist for the last 3 years.

If I were to cold-apply online as a Data Scientist at MBB or any of the other consulting companies a small step below, would my target school undergrad status still help me out? Many of my former classmates from my university are now at MBB. I'd be open to doing data science or traditional management consulting at any one of the major consulting companies -- ideally client facing.

It might get help a little, but I’m sure you could reach out to those former classmates for networking before your apply. I don’t know how beneficial networking is for data science, but if it’s anything like the generalist roles, it extremely important.

Also, consider an MBA. It costs a lot, but it’s the more traditional path at your experience level.

I believe data science recruiting is very different from consulting recruiting in that they look for actual technical skills and experience rather than prestige. Although this depends on the firm. Either way, the best way to apply would be through an internal referral.
