Elon Musk BROKE?
I found this article in the NYT very interesting:
"He says he invested his last cent in his businesses and is living off loans from his wealthy friends. He subsists, according to court filings, on $200,000 a month and still flies his private jet."
"I'd like you to lend me some money"
Etymology is from the cartoon "Popeye", where the character Wimpy would frequently utter this phrase. He was a glutton, and would consume burgers at a ferocious rate but could rarely pay for his habit. The phrase implies the underlying feeling that the person will unlikely actually pay for the hamburger (or whatever) on Tuesday (or ever, for that matter.
I told my bank that I'd gladly 'pay them tuesday for a hamburger today' to buy that new sportscar, but they wouldn't approve me.
Key words in the Elon Musk story: "credit" and "divorce"
Nuff said.
how long can one mooch off his rich friends....the show entourage comes to mind.
I recommend a new cologne, "Turtle Musk"!
Smells like $10K custom made Air Force 1's on the feet of a broke genius, who is now owned by his ex-wife.
Did the guy put all the cash in these companies to keep the ex away from it? Can they do a stock split between the husband and wife?
Just out of curiosity, what do you all think about his ventures? I'm not to keen on Tesla, but what about SpaceX?
Musk is just trying to play smart, the courts will get to the money wherever he has kept it. He is claiming to be broke but he lives on $200,000 a month and still flies private. If he is that broke how come no bank is after him, and he needs to list the names of the friends that have been helping him out.
are his friends considered debtors?
I like Tesla, has potential. It's doing its IPO this coming Monday.
Spacex is an amazing company that already has a multibillion contract with the government and a fairly full launch list for the next 3 years. They have 1 type of engine and two types of rockets now (Falcon 1 and Falcon 9). The company is ingenious and is "the southwest airlines" of commercial space. Spacex has also posted profits for the past 4 years. It is a great company that has successfully reduced costs.
I wish I were broke...
So is the general consensus that he has put all his cash into these companies to keep it away from his money grubbing ex?
I'm actually reading Felix Dennis's (the founder of Maxim Magazine among others) book right now, and he says Musk's situation is entirely common among the extremely wealthy. He admits that he's gotten by on loans from month to month, and he readily admits he's worth somewhere between $400-$900 million. He also says that any extremely wealthy person who can narrow his net worth down to a tighter range than that is lying.
I was pretty shocked when I read about Musk a few days ago, but then I read Dennis's book and realized it's not that big a deal. Musk's soon-to-be ex-wife seems to understand that as well.
The dude is still the man.
I just want to be as broke as Musk.
He's done it all and he's going to get a massive payout in a few days anyways.
Movie Tony Stark is based on him (Elon Musk). Enough said, when fictional super hero characters are based on you. He's the man.

pretty impressive for him to step up like that.
