Emory (50k) vs Baruch (7k)

Hi guys! Sorry to be another high school senior here in the midst of a global pandemic. I just got my college decisions and I'm stuck right now between Emory and Baruch. I'm hoping to get a career in IB in the future then have the opportunity to jump into PE or HF.

I was super excited to get into Emory, but when I found out that I'd be paying 50k a year in tuition, I started considering Baruch's in-city tuition a lot more (7k). My family can afford to pay for Emory, but I don't know if we should. I'm trying to appeal my aid but it won't be possible unless they have a new option for special circumstances or my Dad is unemployed for 3 months.

I was wondering about your guys' thoughts on this. Can you guys talk about about the difference between Emory and Baruch chances in IB? Do you guys think it'll be worth paying the cost for Emory for the opportunities there?

I'm also waitlisted at Umich, Boston College, and Amherst but I don't expect the aid to be much better.

Thanks guys!

High-level overview of my post - At Baruch you;ll have to hustle really hard to get a shot at a top finance role, and you'll miss out on the traditional college experience. At Emory, you'll have great job prospects, and a college experience, but at a a great financial cost.

I went to Baruch so here's my view of Baruch:

Job Prospects: * Baruch has a great rep in the city, everyone comments "Baruch is a great school", however, OCR is pitiful and banks only come to us for back-office roles.

  1. In order to secure a front office role, you have to work pretty hard here, in addition to having a gpa of at least 3.6+. To have a good shot of landing a cool role from Baruch, I would recommend that you join IMG(student run investment fund), and business frats and get as many internships as possible.

Education: Finance classes don't teach any practical skills. I felt that there was very little effort put into creating the curriculum for the classes, and the teachers really don't care about anything. You'll have to teach yourself A LOT of finance on your own to be ready for interviews(which is why i strongly recommend joining finance clubs to learn this).

Additionally, because there are so few teachers teaching the finance classes, you end up in scenarios where classes are over-booked are you're left taking a finance elective that you have no interest in, with a shitty teacher. To get by this, join a sports team or get a good gpa and apply for honors so that you can get priority registration.

Mid-terms and Finals are also extremely tough here, and in most classes two exams make up around 70% of your grade if not more. Business classes also have a curve, and can assign only a select amount of A's, B's, etc. This leads to boatloads of stress, risky cheating and cutthroat competition among students. I had a "friend" once tell me there were no materials to prepare for an exam, and to just read the book.. Then 10 min before the class another student brings up how helpful the practice questions were, and my "friend" commented that he agreed. There are lots of people like this at Baruch, especially brown nosers who act like your best friend if you have a cool internship.

Social Life The only way you'll have one is if you join a business frat and/or really put yourself out there. If I could do it again, I would join a business frat as they make getting a social life much easier.

Because this is a commuter school, most people are working or commuting far to get here, and so you won't experience the traditional college experience here. The average business student is pretty driven, and takes school pretty seriously.

My ex went to Emory so I can comment on Emory as well.

Apparently the guy to girl ratio is so skewed towards girls that guys have their pick of the lot, and the college is extremely hook-up friendly. Recruiting is fantastic. If you get a good gpa here, you'll definitely have a shot at recruiting for top finance roles, and you might not have to work as hard to get a shot at a cool role as opposed to going to Baruch and having to hustle really hard to hopefully interview for a cool role. I don't know how the classes are so I can't comment on that. The campus is nice, clubs are great, and you'll get the traditional college experience here!

I say if you can afford it, then go for Emory (or equivalent schools). What was the point of your parents making that money and enjoying success if they don’t spend it on something as worthwhile as their kids’ education. Baruch is fine I’m sure but from an IB perspective, there is a massive gulf between the two. From a life perspective, I think a similar gulf probably exists, though that’s more subjective I suppose.
