End of the Facebook Era
Shares plummet 20% in a day? Crazy scenes going on after earnings call. Everybody I know has been addicted to instagram and snapchat recently. Has FB seen it's best days? With the rise of instagram business and the ease of snapchat's creativity in messaging abilities is there anything that facebook has to offer anymore? Also, everybody knows the benefits when messaging on snapchat, if you know you know. Do you guys know anybody who still uses FB actively because I sure don't. Is this setback in share price a perfect buying opportunity, or is it a turnaround in sentiment.
Facebook owns Instagram.... this is a buying opportunity imo.
20% isn't a big deal. I'm on FB every day. Closed groups are bigger than ever. FB marketplace is bigger than ever. FB does a lot of non-FB related shit. It's like arguing Google is going down because Gmail's popularity slumped. Didn't we have this same scare with Tesla last quarter?
Agreed. I think people underestimate how much more room for growth there is with these companies. Amazon in particular...they're just getting started. Short term price dips are buying opportunities.
Like any other industry, social media has to reach maturity at some point. You can't have high growth forever. The business model is based on the number of bodies in the world and how much time out of a day you can squeeze out of them, both very transparently finite
FB owns IG. FB is the default online passport, so many apps use FB as your login and i would expect that trend to continue. WhatsApp is the top messaging app everywhere outside of the US. Snapchat's management team seems lost (spectacles). I would not be betting against the Zuck.
This drop isn’t really about its core money making ability—earnings and revenue surged. It’s mostly expectations that FB had been slowing and some confirmation might have surfaced after it was a bit shorter than expected. There’s also the theme of Washington and other governments interfering a lot lately. FB’s costs will increase as they try to get in front of bad actors with hires and tech changes. Plus there’s top line downward pressures as their user growth is topping off. As mentioned above, they already capture the snap/IG crowd because they own IG.
I'd say we're witnessing the transformation of FB from social media time wasting tool to social media enabling tool. As before, it's the default online passport for many different services, and an ecosystem is developing around that capability: Tinder, Angel List, IG, and other services use it for authentication and media sharing. I'd say these are growing pains more than anything.
Ah hyes thats actually a really valid point, a lot of other apps are using FB as a linking tool with FB accounts such as tinder etc.. Also, I bought the stock at 175 after earnings and now its up so all is good (for now)
I’m always surprised to find out people are still using FB regularly. Maybe it’s just because I don’t have any friends but the place seems to be a disorganized spam filled clusterfuck these days.
Haha, I don't think its the fact you have no friends that nobody uses FB it's just that other apps have gained ground and have taken the limelight eg: snapchat, insta, etc. Totally agree that its a messy interface and it just seems pretty shitty to use in comparison to other apps that I would much rather spend my time on. That being said, facebook is definitely the best stalking too out there.
Facebook has its niche uses, but the demographics have definitely shifted
Proclaiming facebook done (and citing share decline) due to Instagram is all-time dumb.
Is facebook losing popularity? Maybe, but I'd take another angle on posting this.
Btw - I own a small amount of FB and might buy more (but I also bought more GE 2 times on the way down so you'd think I'd learn). The drop certainly sucked, but I'm still in the positive on my facebook investment

very close friend works at fb in one of their top priority swe team. He told me that the amount of time people have been spending on fb is actually a very large number and is increasing, so there are a number of people addicted to fb. He also said that they've been working hard on making improvements to user interface and app interaction to get people to stay longer on their apps - instagram, whatsapp, etc. I'd definitely buy fb, it's a growing business and has room to improve a lot from where they are right now, also zuckerberg has some great plans in place according to my friend whose desk is about 2 mins away from zuckerberg's. I'd see the drop as a buying opportunity even though 20% at this price doesn't really make a huge difference.
