End of the Line for Traditional Media?

Newspapers, magazines, radio, etc. are all seeing declining ad revenues and are having a tough time transitioning into the digital space. Television seems to be the only form of media able to keep up as digital advertising is expected to become the largest ad market by 2019.

"You have to fix the plane while you’re flying it."

Lerer, a co-founder of the Huffington Post and currently the Chairman for Buzzfeed, is alluding to the fact that legacy media has to maintain old business models based on subscription and print ad revenue, while successfully venturing into the digital world. The latter category is already hard enough, even without taking into account the balancing act of the former.

The new media companies Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Vox, Vice, etc. have all been pretty successful so far as they had the advantage of starting out with a modern business model. Some of the bigger legacy media companies are choosing to invest in them as a possible failsafe. As of now they're mostly trying to make up for lost revenue through digital subscriptions and paywalls, but these seem like temporary fixes that can’t last in a world where information is readily available. Anything look promising for trad. media in the future?

Caveat: I am no media expert or know anything about the space, so this is completely my own opinion. I think that it's important to realize that many of these online news websites are not primary sources. They are not the ones printing news stories or doing any first-hand reporting, but rather are taking already-published news articles, adding some commentary, and posting it to their website. This would lead me to believe that without traditional media, many of these online news sources falter.

Sil is correct. It is more likely that we see a true hybrid of digital mixed with traditional media rather than a complete end to traditional media. Similar to how we still have video rental (redbox), it just isn't the same as going to a Blockbuster video.

I really do think the events following September 11 (The need for greater surveillance on society), Iraq War and the "Great recovery" After the Global Financial crisis and now this stuff about Russia and Turkey has destroyed mainstream media. And rightfully so

Mainstream media is failing because the content is of extremely low quality. Demand for quality content is higher than ever, as people are bombarded with competing information. MSM destroyed themselves by delivering content geared toward their fellow journalists and elites rather than the actual readers and viewers.

At this point the mainstream media and Info Wars are equidistant from reality. And the latter is a lot more entertaining.

Traditional media outlets are failing because they're garbage. They don't report the news, they're frequently incorrect and they're clearly biased. This election has made this crystal clear.

The coverage focused almost entirely on gossip (emails, tweets, tax returns) as opposed to policy. There was false fact checking, biased poll sampling and collusion with candidates. We know the Clinton campaign worked directly with Politico. We know that CNN and NBC correspondents worked with the Clinton campaign on both republican and democratic debate questions. We know that the media intentionally covered up Wikileaks revelations on DNC corruption (regarding the treatment of the Sanders campaign), potential Clinton Foundation quid pro quo's while simultaneously reporting on Trump's stolen tax returns and secretly recording his personal conversations.

Beyond the clear bias, they were wrong about everything. Trump did not get blown out in the women or black demographic (as compared to other republican candidates). Trump actually did well with the Hispanic vote. The NBC, CNN and NYT polls were way off. This is why traditional media is failing. They project their own bias, their own views of the world and present it as fact. It simply doesn't correspond to reality.

Talking about the end of MSM? Trump wins? Liberals losing their minds all over the place while playing the "old, white male racist" bogey man card right up to expectations? The Hollywood inteligencia put in a complete mental pretzel because the world they have zero exposure to SOMEHOW disagreed with them? Safe spaces caving in? What a time to be alive.

Speaking specifically on the mainstream media, they've been doing great, ratings have been through the roof. It's just "unpopular" because it's degraded in quality and people are pissed off at it.

On that note, I don't think people differentiate enough between bias and journalistic integrity in a way that's similar to opinion vs fact. This is the difference between FoxNews/MSNBC and outlets like NYT/NPR. NPR especially might be oriented towards the left in choosing to report stories that appeal to them, but that doesn't mean what is contained within said stories isn't thoroughly researched, reviewed, and generally a much higher standard of journalism. I've actually gained a lot of respect for them after seeing the direction all the others (NYT included) have gone over the course of this cycle.

Despite the degradation of MSM content wise, a decline in viewership could potentially be very bad if it means people are diverting to outlets that could be much worse (cough* Breitbart).
