Listened to Bill Burr's podcast the other day. He talked about when he was taking drum lessons from an older guy, and the guy talked to him about his life growing up. Bill was miffed to learn about the stuff the guy did, and the guy told him:

"Every generation thinks they are the first to fuck"

I always find it interesting how we think the past is so different, yet it's mainly the same.

Second, I would say "you gotta let people do stupid things."

Love me some good quotes.

"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity, but the dreamers of day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible." - T.E. Lawrence. My all-time favorite.

"I cannot help fearing that men may reach a point where they look on every new theory as danger, every innovation as a toilsome trouble, every social advance as a first step toward trouble, every social advance as a first step toward revolution, and that they may absolutely refuse to move at all." - Alexis de Tocqueville.

"Come, my friends, 'T is not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite the sounding furrows; for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset, and the baths of all the western stars, until I die. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down: It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, and see the great Achilles, whom we knew. Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; one equal temper of heroic hearts, made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." - Ulysses by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

"If I wanted to see the world, I had to imagine it" - Blade Runner 2049, oddly enough

Feb 26, 2019

I miss Christopher Hitchens. He was clever, well-spoken, thoughtful and made well-reasoned arguments. He could debate virtually any topic. He has a brother, but his brother is essentially a poor-man's Chris Hitchens, so it leaves me wanting. There are too few people today who are well-read and well-spoken. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people today who are poorly-read and poorly-spoken but insist on being heard.

It's a nice concept, but he should have chosen a different example. In practice, women did not lose the right to retreat behind their powder puff, and they never will, because men will always want to fuck them, and this nonsense of pretending that gender differences are primarily social constructed is willful ignorance, denial of hard scientific truth, and possession by ideology.

"[bureaucratic despotism] would resemble paternal power if, like that, it had for its object to prepare men for manhood; but on the contrary, it seeks only to keep them fixed irrevocably in childhood; it provides for their security, foresees and secures their needs, facilitates their pleasures, conducts their principal affairs, directs their industry, regulates their estates, divides their inheritances, can it not take away from them entirely the trouble of thinking and the pain of living? It extends its arms over society as a whole; it covers its surface w/ a network of small, complicated, painstaking uniform rules through which the most original minds and the most vigorous souls cannot clear a way to surpass the crowd...it constantly opposes itself to one's acting; it does not destroy, it prevents things from being born; it does not tyrannize, it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and finally reduces each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid and industrious animals of which the government is the shepherd." -Alexis de Tocqueville

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you'd better be running. - I don't know whose this is, let's say it's an African proverb.
