Fifth Year in Undergrad - Yes or No?
Hi everyone, I'm a junior at a target school interested in consulting. I have two boutique internships in consulting, but my parents are worried that I might not have a shot at getting into a top consulting firm in the fall with the current job market. What are your thoughts on taking a fifth year of undergrad, and how to approach the process? Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you.
Why not just recruit next Fall and see what happens?
For full time positions?
might as well recruit for getting a job. trying to time stuff perfectly will only leave you getting burned. if you've had two internships, you hopefully built good connections you can reach out to in order to get their perspective on hirings within their firms. why sit around your school for another year taking underwater basket weaving when all that means is you have to compete with the next year group anyways

I know the firm that I worked at generally looked at taking a 5th year to do undergrad as a question mark to probe during interviews... not sure if "I wasn't sure about the economy" is a satisfactory answer. Maybe you could do a one year masters that is business/economics related? That might be a better solution if you strike out in FT recruiting.
I was planning on doing a double major (currently majoring in economics, also want to major in history) if I did a 5th year, and also joining more clubs. Do you know if this might seem like a compelling use of time, or if there is a better use of time you would recommend if I did pursue a 5th year? Thank you so much!
I can't really say as its something that is kind of in the eye of the beholder. That could be an acceptable reason for many people. To me, someone telling me that they needed to stay in school for another year to get a history major would maybe bring up more questions as it doesn't really strengthen the case for consulting. Something like statistics, computer science or a business discipline like accounting or finance would make me look at that candidate more positively.
