Finance PhD.

Hello,

I am currently an undergrad studying Applied Mathematics and have a 4.0 (4.27/4.33), I will be applying for a PhD in Finance in a few months. I will get my PhD at 22-24 (I am 19 now). What kind of position could I get in Finance and what would be most lucrative with a Finance PhD? Which concentration of a Finance PhD is most desirable to firms?

Regards.

Are you in the U.S.? Which PhD programs are you planning to apply? I ask because good programs usually expect applicants to have more advanced math and statistics training than UG in applied math. Don’t want to crush your dream. Just some background.

keep in mind that strong finance PhD programs like you mentioned have acceptance rates of 1-5%.

How much math have you taken?

the PhD program would look for at a minimum:

Calc I II MV Linear algebra Diff Eq calc based probability calc based statistics econometrics

good to have but not essential: real analysis (preferred) stochastic calc (preferred) point set topology (optional)

Have you taken the GRE? Usually programs will prefer that over the GMAT. How about research experience? Some types of internship experience help as well.

Not being a finance major won’t be a huge hinderance but they do expect at least basic finance knowledge.

A working knowledge of programming also helps/might be required (Python R C++ Java Matlab)

My major covers all of those courses as well as a mathematical finance course. I will take the GRE soon.

I currently do research in fluid mechanics and have one publication, should I focus on getting published in finance?

Regards.

Publicaitons in finance would be preferred but any publications are a plus.
