Finance PhD vs. Applied Math MSc
Hey all
In a few months, I will complete my Finance MSc. While I will work for one or two years, I am thinking about what to do afterwards. I would like to become a trader and am unsure what the best choice for such a career path would be (both programmes from target schools):
- Finance PhD (for its original research focus)
- Applied Math MSc (for its rigor)
Now, I am very well aware that work experience is usually prioritized to a second degree. However, I feel like I still lack some of the theoretical (i.e. quantitative) foundations necessary to break into the field, so I figured that a second degree would not only make me a more marketable candidate but also allows me to familiarize myself with useful essentials. I am curious about what you guys think the way to go is.
Marshall D. Teach, sorry there are no responses yet. Maybe one of these topics can point you in the right direction:
Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.
Honestly I legit don't think I've ran into anyone with a PhD yet... although most people i've dealt with were IB/PE/HF pros and pretty much I haven't seen anyone with credentials higher than an MBA..... Not sure why you would need a PhD to break in; especially if your MSc is from a target school I don't see why you can't break in already........ Just my .02c
So, if you were in my position, would you consider the MSc in Applied Math?
I'd be recruiting right now if I were you Ultimately you need to have some sort of experience to be competitive--- a degree without any internships/relevant jobs can only take you so far.
I'd reccomend an MBA from Tai Lopez's executive mentorship course.
phd for quant roles. recruit now for ib etc.
At some point, you will face Masters fatigue and simply be viewed as a Masters collector. If you are serious about a career in finance, be it as a trader or something else, the PhD is the way to go. Take a look at any and all firms you'd be interested in working for and see how many of the principals have PhDs. Plus, you generally get funding for a PhD, this is generally not the case for Masters programs.
