Fordham Gabelli vs. Emory Goizueta (Undergrad)
Hey guys. I've been going to the in the Gabelli School of Business Undergrad program for 1 year now and have been accepted into Emory as a transfer.
My question is, if I want to work in IB in NY, should I stay at FU or go to Emory (And do an internal transfer to Goizueta (2yr program))?
FU, has the clear advantage of being in close proximity to Wall Street, but from what I've read Goizueta has better connections and is ranked much higher.
Also, if for some reason I didn't make it into Goizueta and got an Econ degree from Emory how would that compare to a degree from FU's business school?
Thank you for any advice you can provide.
At first glance this answer seemed like a no brainer. However, upon further review I found:

I would say the most shocking piece of information I found was Emory's Goizueta placed 4 students at Lazard. Seriously?
Also do note that Fordham seems to place very well. Then again these "top employers" don't say what jobs students received. The 19 students employed by JP Morgan could be 19 techies, 19 ibankers or some more likely some combination of the former.
emory is a much better school
Emory places well for Lazard, but not too strongly at most other banks if I remember correctly. Emory's Lazard alumni pull really hard for Goizueta kids supposedly.
Emory. But make sure you can do well there. Their core sucks. You don't want your GPA to go down.
Emory dude! I know a few Emory peeps that made it to JPM & BOA IB.
Emory by a mile. It's also a much better "college experience".
i don't think proximity to wall street is what banks consider when they hire. granted you might be able to 'network' more efficiently but i'd imagine there are way more successful finance alum from emory than there are from fordham.
also bro just think about it. do you want to say you went to fordham or emory? seriously
TraderDaily, what do you mean by 'their core sucks'?
Their core sucks in that it is a tough set of classes, meaning the OP's GPA could drop. I've heard of it happening when people transfer to Emory. So I was saying tread lightly.
Emory.
I'll put it this way: Fordham was my financial safety (they actually do have a great honors program and good merit money if you are a national merit scholar and have good test scores (2250/34+))
Emory was a school I would consider as a target / low reach.
Fordham's acceptance rate is around 40% Emory admitted around 25% (although don't read in to acceptance rates too much, a lot of schools are trying to lower them as much as possible by encouraging anyone and everyone to apply as it boosts their ranking/"prestige")
Fordham's 25/75 is 1830-2050 27-31
Emory's 25/75 is SAT total: 2020–2220 ACT: 30-33
This mean's a student who is in the top 25% at Fordham (at least according to SAT's) is at the bottom 75% at Emory.
It's not even close.
Also Fordham's 4 year graduation rate is 76% and emory's is 82% and Fordham has quite a few commuter students.
hmm, seems like I'm close to a decision then
I'd like to confirm. Emory has a better network (For NY) than Fordham, despite its location? That has been my biggest worry; that moving away from the city where I want to work may lower my chances of working there.
Everything else has been pretty straight-forward in terms of rankings, avg. test scores etc.
Just graduated from Emory's MBA program, but would be happy to vouch for their BBA program as well. They have some very smart, talented kids, and they place well. I personally know recently graduated BBAs taking jobs at JPM, and DB, some in IB, S&T, and Equity Research. Further, some BBA alums have been great resources for my classmates and me during the job search. From the MBA class (which is only about 170 full time grads per year), placement into IB has been excellent, and that will be a network you can also leverage.
Fordham is a good school, and to be perfectly fair, a guy who used to run the desk I worked with at a BB was a Fordham MBA. I have a friend in their MBA program now and he's extremely capable too. I know the law school at Fordham is well regarded as well. I don't know much about Fordham's undergrad programs.
I don't think grade inflation at Goizueta is an issue, but I do think it's quite feasible to get good grades there. I'm not that familiar with the BBA core, but I'd trust the school can put together a set of classes which will prove useful in a business career.
I think if the question is only about job prospects, Emory is a far better choice. To your question of what happens if you don't get into the BBA program (which does happen - do not consider the BBA program a shoe in if you're at Emory), it would be more difficult to get into IB as an Econ major (specifically for Emory because the BBA program is the best way in).
Do look at the transfer as a whole though. Emory and Fordham are extremely different. Atlanta doesn't feel like NY, Emory is probably considerably more expensive, the class makeup is completely different, culture of the school is very different, etc. I think Emory would give you a better chance at IB, but you'd have to decide if it makes sense for you.
I ended up transferring to Emory instead of Fordham, Wake Forest, Cloumbia (General Studies) etc. definitely do not regret my decision. Academics are strong here and there is plenty of Ibanks recruiting (we get everyone but Goldman IBD and MS) but Emory has a very strong network on the street. Not sure about the core diluting gpa, I transferred from a small liberal arts college with no business school and have maintained a 3.8 thus far. Though it is very competitive, cut off for deans list was 3.75 last semester.
Emory, besides NY you have Southern IB, better women and weather
I'd like to make an update: I decided to go to Emory and I have not regretted the decision. Classes are tough and it has been difficult to keep a good GPA, it seems to be worth it with the connections I'm making already.
If you want banking you need to start networking NOW! Start searching the alumni database for contacts. Make sure you do an internship every summer, you can increase your chances if you network early.
I'm a BBA at Emory right now. The core doesn't suck. I found all of the classes very helpful, but keep in mind that everything is on a curve. That means that if you are a "numbers guy" you will be competing with creative type marketing majors in the core marketing and operations classes.
Placement right now on the street for banking isn't great as of now, that being said, idk if it really is for anyone. You have a good chance of landing a job at a boutique in Atl as I did, or going to Charlotte which also has some great IB opportunities.
The majority of Emory students are from up north, so networking is fine. When I was a freshman, my roommate from Boston knew everyone. I grew up 2 hrs from atlanta and had no incoming group of friends.
The BBA program is consistently ranked in the top 5. Great placement for consulting, and not bad for banking; however, it's not a target school for most BBs.
Hope it works out for you.
