Forex - Reputation of being difficult?

I hope this is the right place for this but anyway. Can anyone explain to me why Fx has the reputation of being very difficult to do well in I understand the only hedge funds that focus on it are Bacon and Soros. And what are the best desks in it today. I heard the most successful one a few years back was Bear Sterns's. thanks for the info in advance.

It's hard because it is a financial market like any other but it is easier to use excessive leverage in fx than it is in stocks. 10x leverage in FX is not unheard of
