Forget to Update OPT (10 Days Rule)

Hi all,

I forgot to update my employment status on my school's OPT update website. The rule says that I have to let the school know within 10 days of any changes regarding my employment status. I have been swamped with so many stuffs that I simply forgot to do that.

What should I do now? How will this affect me when I applyf for H1B next year? Has anyone heard or encountered this situation before? What do schools do when they received employment updates from post-completion OPT students? Do they report it to the govt?

Thanks a lot!

The first person you should have contacted about this is your Designated School Official. She/He would be the one best able to assist you.

Hi I am in the same position where I didn't realize I would have to report to school regarding the change in employment. I am contacting my school tomorrow. Were you able to figure it out? Any information would be really appreciated. Thanks so much!

me too! Have you guys heard anything from? My school says it would probably be OK as long as I have evidence to show that I am not unemployed for more than 90 days (pay stubs etc....)

I think this is correct.. Besides.. if you read the actual legal language it basically says that you MAY be subjected to whatever, not that you CERTAINLY WILL... so i don't think you will be deported for the the singular crime of not updating that info on time.. That said it is always better to do it at the earliest..

I was in the same situation, but my DSO was pretty chill about it. I think you should be fine as long as you update. I would check with your DSO to make sure.
