Gary Vaynerchuck. Yay or Nay
So Gary Vee is definitely a really successful dude, and his motivational speeches can have huge impact on millennials (like me) in making us get off our ass and stop playing around with our dicks.
Tai Lopez is also trying to follow the same path as Gary through becoming rich and giving motivations to how he did it but for some reason Tai just seems like a douche? I don't know why I don't like this guy because in theory he is just doing the same as GV right? What do you guys think, is Tai actually a douche bag or am I trippin.
nay for both.
Any reason? Or do you think they are both giant D-bags?
yeah pretty much. tai is a complete fake. gary thinks he knows everything, super cocky/arrogant. not self made. gary was given his family business to him.
Gary Vee seems much more genuine than Tai Lopez. I wanna kick Tai’s ass every time he pops up on any YouTube video I watch.
The only thing I don’t like about Gary Vee, is he’s kind of a scrub. He reminds me of a less drugged up, more sane version of Shkreli.
I’d grab a beer with Gary and at least I know I wouldn’t need to get him to talk.
Yeah I have noticed recently that I keep getting ads with Tai Lopez "esque" bumblefucks trying to sell their "trading course" to me. I honestly just wish these dudes could just advertise in playboy magazine like in WolfofWallStreet
People who share their videos on LinkedIn and act as if they're being profound need a drill through the head.
They are the new age Tony Robbins and Guy Kiyosaki.
When Kiyosaki said that single-property commercial real estate was less risky than the stock market, I immediately closed his book and threw it away.
They are both great internet marketers but a lot of the information they sell/distribute is out of date or dumbed down to the point of being useless.
Gary needs to stick to his shitty wine videos. Dude was a bootleg Som at his families liquor store. Now I see he is some profit.
His advice is common sense mixed with vulgarity to be “real”.
Hard pass.
Nay. The thing about Gary is that he's the exact opposite of self-made. He talks about how hard work and dedication is all that he needed to make his 60 million dollar wine thing but rarely mentions the fact that he started out with 3 million dollars in the business. It wasn't even his own business to begin with; his dad essentially handed it over to him. He pretty much failed high school and college and the only reason he was able to rise back up was the fucking 3 million dollar company that his family already owned. Sure he was an immigrant with big dreams or whatever and he knew pretty much no English when he came here, but the truth is that he wasn't some impoverished beggar to begin with anyway.
Gary has stated that he didn’t get any ownership rights in his family’s wine business. Not sure if that’s verified, but if it’s true then I’d call him self made. Tai Lopez is a fraud. I have friends who know him, he makes a ton of money just off his self help motivation Mumbo jumbo. His lifestyle is just leased and faked. His real estate course is laughable. There is a clip on YouTube where the dude doesn’t know what a cap rate is (All the people who work in RE know that’s the most basic thing to learn).
In another video Gary stated that he lived in his parents bedroom for 5 years to save up the 100k that he used for his first business. Not a lot of people can mooch at their parents place for that long. Dudes a straight bum.
What's he accomplished exactly?
Fucking Nay. He is the most inconsistent person ever. He makes a video preaching working 18 hours a day in your 20s and grind none stop, which could be a fair point. However the problem is that he will then make another video saying how you need to travel and chill in your 20s and it doesnt matter if dont achieve anything in your 20s because life starts at 30.
Which one is it Gary V?
work hard play hard
We all know there are 72 hours a day. Use it wisely.
Well if you actually follow his content there is no contradiction. He's saying if you know what you want, then grind non stop and get it whichever way you can. But if you don't know or would rather chill, then go do that so that you get exposure to different things so that you may figure out what you want.
The whole idea is as long as you're doing what you want and you're not complaining about what you don't have, then you're winning. That could be working 18 hours a day or it could be chilling on the beach.
Yay. Dude knows his market and what they want. He's brilliant at being a "generalist" and everyone hustling at their own thing or feeling lost can feel some level of comfort just from hearing him talk. He has his own style and energy and it appeals well to anyone who just needs a good pep talk.
I feel like you guys are overanalyzing his actual content to find consistency. It's not about that and his audience actually doesn't care. People listen to him because no one around can give off the same energy and make them feel like they're not alone in struggles.
Most people on WSO aren't his target market. If you work in finance or went to an elite school, you tend to be surrounded by motivated people already. This is definitely not necessarily the case in other fields and GV fills that void.
Full disclosure: I don't follow his stuff but I do respect the craft of being a mass-market influencer. If you really dig into the work involved to be "popular" on social media, there's actually quite a bit involved
I find the GaryV stuff that my friends post on LinkedIn annoying, but I’d be okay with all of you calling me a “nay” if I had a similar run of success.
That said, as far as the hype machine you guys are referring to, I’m also a nay.
Strong nay to both. Motivational speakers are preying on people who believe that there is some "secret" to success. The reality is 99.9% of people that follow these guys will be the same after they listen/read their content. It's all about making you feel better about yourself and your prospects.
As socalre mentioned above Tai Lopez is a fraud that knows next to nothing about investing. Tai is a classic LA flim-flam man and Gary is simply a notch above him. If Tai is the crack whore offering blowies in the alley, Gary is the escort waiting at the hotel bar.
Both are utter junk.
If you're not motivated, find something that makes you.
here's a little secret: truly successful people don't make motivational videos. they may write a book, but then they get back to work. if these guys happen to motivate someone who actually does some good either professionally or privately, great. but after a cursory review of some of their videos, they come off as snakeoil salesmen.
I'll put it this way, I go to lots of industry conferences hosted by firms that give the interns chubbies. I've never once seen a youtube sensation as a keynote speaker. I've seen military guys, consultants who happen to have youtube videos, motivational speakers, professors, economists, and so on, so I have to think that if these guys really were successful and had good content to offer, goldman would've ponied up to put them after abby joseph cohen.
also, while I don't follow either of these guys, tai lopez seems like a full on snake oil salesman, whereas gary vee seems like a spaz with some success (based on what I read, he did in fact grow his family's business by an order of magnitude, so while he didn't start the business, he for sure took it to the next level) but ultimately is trying to replicate that over and over. two very different dudes, both of whom I'll probably never cross paths with again.
These guys are snake oil salesmen, who the fuck watches motivational videos anyways? Discipline trumps motivation any day, just get your ass down to work.
Damn there is a lot of misinformation on this thread. As someone who met Gary V in person I'll start off with him.
First Gary Vaynerchuk is NOT a motivational speaker. All of his talks are really focus on the tech space and mainly because people/companies/conferences seek out his advice because he's been ahead of everyone else in the VC space. The small 3-5 minute clips you see across linkedin or w/e is usually taken from a longer speech he did because ppl like small bit size pieces of his content therefore it seems like hes some motivational guru.
Not sure if you all know this but he actually got into the early investing rounds of uber, snapchat, insta, and others. His wine video success/business really helped him launch Vaynermedia(in the same building as BCG in husdon yard ~ one of his clients btw) which is a media agency for fortune 500 companies. Also snakeoil salemen is a really stupid term because unlike tai lopez he has no courses he sells outside of his books. And regardless of the field you're in we all sell something.
Don't know enough about Tai Lopez to be honest but I respect the fact that he made a name for himself in social media when no one knew who this guy was 5 years ago. Rather you agree with his tactic of selling courses based on the following he amassed is subjective. No one on this site knows rather or not he really made all the money he claims but for now I'd take his 2.7m followers on IG and turn that into my MD's all in comp anyday.
Nice try, Gary.
