Landing consulting gig in NYC - Best Master's Degree?
Hi guys,
I've been a long-time lurker of WSO but finally decided to join up and become part of the community here. I'm interested in management consulting, but unfortunately my academic and professional background has made it difficult to land this type of gig. Some background info:
-Graduated May 2014 with 3.8+ in a social science from fairly well-known private school (ex. USC, NYU, BC)
-2 internships during college, doing another one now (one media start up, one political consulting firm, one foreign policy-focused non-profit)
-Family is all in NYC and would like to stay in NYC where I am based.
I've been looking at a bunch of Master's Degrees in the US and UK but am curious which schools/programs you guys would recommend. I'm looking at:
LSE: International Management (the 2-year MiM is just too costly)
LBS MiM
Imperial Msc Management
UVA Ms Commerce
Duke MMS
Also wanted to check out NYU's MS Management offered through their engineering school. I can't find any info on it (maybe TNA has some information on it?).
I'd prefer to be in a city (a clear preference for NYC or London here) but am worried about reputation of the English schools back in NYC. It seems all schools are pretty good for breaking into MBB but still am curious what you guys think is the best course of action.

Thanks for the response. I did not do any sort of recruiting/interviewing for MBB or any consulting firm upon graduation as I barely knew what I wanted to do at the time. It's some I've been thinking about in the past few months, so I really missed the boat during senior year.

Hi guys,
I'm an accounting major at a non-target. I decided on my school when I was set on Big 4, before I was educated on the other options like consulting and IB, and before I knew anything at all about targets.
My plan is still in place to do Big 4 audit for a few years and hopefully move into TAS and see where that takes me, but I was wondering if any type of master's program at a target could help me break into MBB. I dont think there is, but I just wanted to see if I was over looking anything.

Harvard Kennedy School and SAIS are non MBA/JD/MD programs that I know MBB recruits from. Couldn't even tell you whether it's 1 or 2 years for a degree, though.

A tired and clueless finance guy could really use some advice.
I really want to transition from Finance to Management consulting. For background, I'm in my first year at a top BB bank. I want to make the transition, but I don't know how and what the interview process is like. I've applied to career sites, but I haven't heard back yet. I was very recently accepted to London Business School's MiM program and Duke's MMS. To my knowledge, these programs place well into management consulting, but part of me wonders if I really need another degree to facilitate the switch. Can anyone speak about these programs, and lateraling into strategy consulting? My target firms are Oliver Wyman, Deloitte S&O, Accenture strategy, Strategy&, and M/B/B.
Bump- could really use some advice.

From their reports, alumni conversations, etc. LBS places much better than Duke, admittedly. And I'm also applying to LSE, but that seems to be more finance focused. I don't want to do a masters, because I really don't think I need it, but I'm willing to do anything to make the switch.
Ok. I was asking because I wanted to make sure you were looking at MMS etc, and not the MBA program placement.
I know of one person who came transferred in a year out of undergrad; she came in at the analyst level after having spent a year working at a startup. That's a much different situation than you; you're going to need to provide a real reason why you are looking at coming in now as opposed to last year when you had the chance to recruit.
Talk to your buddies at your undergrad who went through/are recruiting for consulting, and get the recruiter contact info. That's going to be your most likely entry point; just know that you'll be competing for an entry level spot.
Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how could a year of startup experience answer the 'why consulting' question better than a startup?
I know the LBS program places very well into consulting. It could also help to craft your story saying you wanted the MiM to figure out what specific type of business you would like to go into and that consulting gives you what you are searching for after the mim.
Don't overlook the idea of lateraling from your bank. It may be a long shot, but reach out to consultants and see. I think it would be pretty easy to spin the whole "I decided finance wasn't for me for x,y,z reasons, and I want to move to consulting". This path might be trickier, but would save you a lot of time and money.
