Goldman Sachs - Interview with the firm for a summer internship

I have an interview with Goldman Sachs for a summer internship in their operations department, very nervous because this is a very tough internship to get, any researching ideas or advice about their interviews/ company/ people... to ready myself and equip myself with for the interview?

superU, don't mind flake. for GS interviews of any kind just know that if they don't want you there's nothing you can do. i don't know about operations but GS already knows what they want and if you are not that person there's no advice or tip that can change that.

 

Who sent you the e-mail? Career services or GS? (Assuming that they are interviewing on your campus) I'd call career services to confirm that you are on the interviewee list before talking to anyone at GS (who can potentially affect the decision to interview you or not).

I agree with the above posters. I doubt you got dinged.

 

From what I understand, firmwide interviews aren't uncommon. If you applied to IBD and GIR, and you received an interview...I would assume you have higher chances to get placed into the above two divisions among others.

I applied to IMD and GIR. Somehow, I got an email specifically stating that I have an interview for IMD (NY office).

yeah, i just changed my phone interview into an in-person interview since me and the interviewer are both in taiwan... i think i made the right move.

the lady's from GIR. is it going to be strictly firm-wide?

 

What's your class standing? sophomore? junior? senior?

I would expect to receive many personality/fit questions for the first round. (if you don't believe me, go to GS website and it explains everything)

So expect personality questions rather than questions related to specific divisions (though it's good to know why you want to work for your applied positions and why GS and stuff).

It's also a good idea to know what's going on in the market and the industry you are interested in. But I would expect the majority of em to be personality/fit.

Sorry to be a tad off-topic, I didn't want to start a new topic as my question relates to GS IMD. Is it safe to assume that they've sent out all of the interview offers for non-targets? I'm unfamiliar with interview timelines in the U.S., so any guidance would be much appreciated.

 

soulsearching, i am a 4th year student but since im in a 5yr accounting program so im just starting my search for a SA position.

I believe you regarding the first round being mainly fit/behavioral questions. it is really hard to be fully prepared so u just gotta know what u have done before going in... thats my strategy.

of course, tell goldman that im as obsessed about teamwork as they are.

I didn't know they differentiate target & non-target. I got my "here is the interview" email last week. I am scheduling for the exact time slot 10th for the interview on 15th.

Hey - did your school have an early deadline or did you go about applying via different means? our process for goldman has not started yet as we drop resumes in abt a week and have first rounds 10 days following that. just curious..

 

Waltersobcheck - You made the right call in offering to interview in person. Was in a similar situation interning at a Big 4 in NYC a few years back, so I offered to go in person for all of my first IBD rounds. Not too many took me up on it, but the ones who did were very impressed. Much easier to make a good impression in person, and you'll already have a leg up WRT to knowing faces and having people go to bat for you in the second rounds. Congrats and best of luck.

 

Mostly fit, but in my experience, it's up to you to make the sell as to why you should go on to the second-round.

I was at a superday (combined first and final round) for study abroad candidates. They said of 400 applications, they invited about 100 to interview, of which maybe 35 tops made it past the first round.

 

I interviewed as a non-target for Goldman SA program last winter, i think it was this early, about the second week of January. The day was called "Non-Target Consortium". I had a 30 minute interview with 1 HR person. They did not interview me for just one division, it was a firm-wide interview to see if I fit anywhere within the firm

I also opted to do it in person instead of on the phone.

My interview was almost all "fit". they did ask if i followed the market and what were some of my favorite stocks

It was my very first "real" interview because it was so early in January. Looking back, this interview was a lot less "smooth" than others

 

Definitely do it in person. I cannot emphasize this more as a non-target who had to conduct many BB first round interviews over the phone. It's much harder to make that great impression over the phone which would inevitably land you a superday invitation.

 

I am not exactly from a non-target school. I am a sophomore, and I go to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I have an interview coming up with GS as well. I would be delighted to hear interview tips with GS from you guys.
