Group Placement for SA 2022
Hello, accepted an offer at JPM for generalist and HR told me group placement happens in January (2022) after some networking sessions between groups and interns. Is it normal to look up current analysts/ associates in favorable groups and try and network now? Or should I wait closer to January?
If I do network now, is it bad to ask how sweaty it is within the group? I am happy to suck it up as a SA but I want to not get too fucked. Any info or tips welcomed, not trying to flex JPM but I don't believe MS or GS do group placement like JPM. Could be wrong though.

congrats and Bump. adding to the question pertaining to JPM. Can you not request different group placement after SA?
Grouo placement is final. In response to OP, if actual group placement events and placement day is January, you should definitely start before. For example, mind was in April and I began reaching out to people in November (like 2-3) and actually started in like January. Early on its important not to be too aggressive since it is early. Also at first just find out about what a lot of the groups are like, don’t tell one group early you’re super interested before talking to at least a few groups. As it gets closer to the process, you want to talk more to your top 3 and 100% indicate interest.
from my understanding, networking for groups really doesn't happen until January, but I could be wrong
Bump how should one go about networking for group placement
I was told in past years that sometimes JPM people reach out to you for networking instead of the intern reaching out to them, so does this mean that team is super interested in you already?
SAs have already started reaching out - I suggest you do the same
Should we be attaching resumes in these outreach emails? Also I'm a non target so I only have one alum and at my bank currently, and they're in a shit group. Is it okay to reach out to non alums?
imo attaching resume can't hurt, I've been sent emails with and without, but it's always a personal preference to the Analyst. Def ok to reach out to non-alum, but idk maybe try to find a connection and write a good email

1. Is it normal to look up current analysts/ associates in favorable groups and try and network now?
Definitely does not hurt and actually shows your interest which is a positive. Don't discount the little things, they go a long way toward securing your final offer
2. If I do network now, is it bad to ask how sweaty it is within the group?
Do not directly ask this unless you're on personal terms with that person because this does not reflect well. More indirect questions that may give you a hint can be like asking how the deal flow has been lately, which can indicate (1) how the hours have been, (2) whether you'll be in a group with healthy deal flow etc. (3) how that person responds which can tell you whether he/she enjoys being in the group
Above all, think about which industries you have a genuine curiosity, interest, or even passion in! IBD is extremely challenging so a personal interest in that sector definitely helps
Thank you for this write up! I have found several analysts on linkedin but cannot message them without linkedin gold. Is it okay to cold email and is there a good time in the day to email? I am assuming the email format as (edited out)
