have return offer from BB – still *zero* progress. might just sign return soon.

Curious, not judging but, why did you decide to re-recruit. Just to see if you could get an offer elsewhere to have options or because you don't want to stay at your current firm?

the honest answer is 1) the current firm (overall) doesn't get a lot of looks from headhunters / buyside & has mediocre exits, 2) don't think some co-interns who also got returns / even some full-time people are necessarily "sharp," and 3) due to the previous two factors, I'm concerned about me gradually lowering my expectations and becoming less competitive in my career, which I really don't want given how young we are.

Interesting. I think #3 is a very valid reason that I probably should start to think about more often both when thinking about my own career but also why others make the choices that htey do.
