Have a phone call with the founder & CEO of a large & successful fund. Need advice.

Hey guys--

I reached out to him with expressed interest in his field & industry specialization and he surprisingly returned my email & now we got a called scheduled. I've done the networking rounds before, but never with someone so senior and successful. What are some things I can do to turn this call into something material? I have a strong background in his industry specialization & finance, so I think I am qualified to do the work. Should I prepare a long/short pitch?

Thanks,
cabbagecorpIPO

Hey cabbage congrats! Sounds exciting, yea I'd prepare a pitch and be able to talk intelligently about his industry. Do you mind pming me which firm?

ask him how he got started (everybody likes to talk about their roots) and how he was able to break away from the masses. How did he learn his "secret sauce". You are not asking for him to divulge his secret sauce...but rather...how he learned it...so you can follow a similar path.

If you show you are humble, smart, and interested in learning...maybe he will point you in the right direction...maybe you can ask if his firm offers an internship. You can't say "will you hire me" but you can infer the desire with your questions.

I doubt anyone really has a "secret sauce" anymore that they would be afraid of being copied (outside of some of the quant funds). A lot of it is being better at doing your secret sauce (einhorn would come to mind though he's suffering now) or having an institutional bias that helps you practice your secret sauce (Buffett has this - reputation/sticky capital/preferred buyer for family owned businesses; not something easily replicated). Other secret sauce nowadays would be activist investing. I don't think a ton of guys have the institutional reputation built up to pull that game off.

Best Response

Treat it like any normal conversation is probably your best bet. These folks all started in your shoes at one point or another, and I've found that the most senior individuals were also fairly down to earth as well (which certainly makes sense as being approachable and charismatic is probably one of the reasons for their success :P).

Keep the conversation on him. Asking him about his background will naturally lead to follow up questions, and then I'm sure he'll ask you a few things about your background and objectives. As long as you stay current and present in the conversation, it should run smoothly and flow well. Ultimately you should be able to come away with a great contact, who you can continue to reach out to for advice down the line or an opportunity if it presents itself. I think he knows your purpose in reaching out so definitely no need to say it outright, but you can say something along the lines of, "Well I've been very interested in [ ] industry because it aligns with my background. Do you have any suggestions as to position myself well for an opportunity in the field?". In most cases he will either speak to opportunities at his firm, or will perhaps direct you to someone he knows. Getting a referral from someone in his position is a great recommendation in all respects

It sounds like it will be a great conversation. As with any of these calls, approach it with an open mind and with the purpose to learn rather than get a job. In due course the stacking of enough of these chips will lead to a few opportunities that you might otherwise not have had prior. All the best :)

There's a closer meaning to my user name. Try reading it quickly. Perhaps you will then understand ;P
