Have you ever quit your job and just fucked off for a period of time?
I ask myself almost every day why I just don’t quit my job and fuck off to the woods or some remote island for some time. Several others have mentioned thoughts such as this on this site, but I’m wondering if any of you have actually done it.
I know Isaiah has mentioned spending a year in the Canadian wilderness, and another poster once talked about “wilderness therapy” in a comment.
I just did a cycling class and finished 10/17. Definitely could have pushed harder and was coasting for much of it - I can see how some people value the group setting, but it wasn’t for me. Instructor yelling “let’s go - keep pushing - yeah let’s get it” just wasn’t doing it for me. It’s a solid workout tho.
yes i quit my big 4 job then traveled for like 6 months before getting a Corp Fin job. Being immediately available made the job search slightly easier as i didnt have a notice period tying me up and could interview 24/7. Met my wife during this period.
Currently about to quit another job and have a 2 month break as well (of which 1 month is paid vacation).
If you have the savings, have a plan what to do which is interesting (so you can talk about it during interviews) then why not. Don't do it just to play DOTA and eat chips on the sofa and grow that.
.
I dream about this every day, but I didn’t have the foresight to save up from the current job. Plus my husband and I are trying to buy a house soon, so I’m counting on my upcoming bonus to help.
But with more planning, I would absolutely do it. If your bank account can handle it, I think it’s a great idea.
Yep, I took a break between jobs. The time gap to just mess around gives you time to compartmentalize where work fits in your life, and you actually have time to think about life, your values, and all those touchy feely things.
Highly, highly recommend it
How long are your breaks between jobs?
About a month or so. Interestingly enough, most companies don't care if you take a break, as long as you have a story or reason why. And it doesn't have to be "I went to go save the yellow bellied narwhals of Africa", it could just be that you wanted to take some time to plan out your career path bc your most recent role revealed X, Y and Z factors about what you want in a career.
