Healthcare Consulting firms, best for healthcare strategy - Best brand and exit opps?

Who are the best consulting firms for healthcare strategy? Which firms have the best brand and exit opps? How does Evolent stack up?

Bonus points for those who don't just say "MBB".

Previous advisory board employee here...I would avoid anything owned by them (I.e. evolent). Look at Chartis Group for boutique strategy and Deloitte actually has a very solid healthcare practice.

I dont think this is necessarily a fair assessment of ABC. The various departments/product lines do vary considerably in terms of quality of employees as well as the nature of the work. For example, while many of the Dedicated Advisors in Performance Technologies seem to serve more as relationship managers than consultants, the work in Research and Insights is certainly more substantive. OP, feel free to PM me regarding specifics.

Would second the b22's opinion on ABC. We inherited some deliverables from them at a previous client and they were crap.

I would second the Chartis Group. They focus exclusively on the provider side and most of their consultants have a brand name MBA. A principal recently left to become a Senior VP for a world renowned children's hospital, so the exit opportunities seem fantastic. They really emphasize having a (demonstrated) passion for the provider side; as such candidates with non-healthcare experience are at a disadvantage.

the hell kind of strategy do you think there's going to be in the provider world?

sure, pharma i can understand. payor i can understand. evolent is provider focused.

LEK does a good amount of pharma scan work. Deloitte (and Monitor) do a good amount of commercial strategy for pharma. BCG has the ears of a good number of payor CEOs.

Modern healthcare 2011 survey ranked by provider-side revenue:

Deloitte Advisory Board Huron Healthcare Navigant Quorum Health Resources Xerox (buck consultants) BDK FTI Consulting KPMG CTG Health Solutions ECG Management Consultants Perficient Optum ECI/HCI Advisory Group Beacon Partners Crowe horwath Dixon Hughes Goodman Camden Group Pershing Yoakley & Associates Integrated Healthcare Strategies

Keep in mind this was a voluntary survey - some big names missing. Not a ranking on quality of work either. Factor in the massive increase in strategy work since 2011, which guarantees a reshuffling of this list.

I am a little confused here..can someone please differentiate operation consulting vs strategy consulting? I always thought that operation is strategy and vice versa.

clinical research to consultant (newbie to big4)

I recently interviewed for PwC's Advisory R&D pharma practice for a Sr. Associate role. Anyone willing to shed some lights on this practice? Culture, type of engagements, exit strategy? thank you in advance! As you can tell from my username, I am transitioning in from the industry side with a MS degree, aka non-MBA.

Sorry, can't speak to any pharma work. Only have knowledge/experience with provider side. Good luck with the interview though

Thanks for all the info everyone. Although the reviews of ABC weren't so good, I just got word today that I now have two competing offers -- one from ABC (Senior Analyst in R&I at 63k) and one from Evolent (Associate for newly formed QA Department at 52k). I never applied to any of the Big 5 as I really wanted to stay healthcare focused, and am actually pretty stoked on the two offers as I am coming from two years in global health strategy at non-profits..... thoughts?

Do these roles require travel? What geographic location if you don't mind me asking? A friend of mine is looking for opportunities at ABC and Evolent as well.

Thanks

Congratulations wrw2013! You're headed into a great field and will not be short for work. No matter where you end up, provider side strategy is an intellectually stimulating practice area. Do a favor as well - keep WSO updated with some healthcare consulting threads, it'd be great to see some more this coming year

@ventjock -- both of these are for DC offices, and both have at most 30% travel.

@Consultant22 -- Glassdoor states that 63k is exactly at average for a Senior Analyst in the DC office. What salary range were you expecting? I also negotiated Evolent up to 58k -- thoughts?

Gotta accept an offer by end of week so let me know if anyone has any closing thoughts! And thanks everyone for the advice and input. Will try to repost on more healthcare topics in the future.

just take the one with more money. they're both the same in terms of street cred and exit opps - ie. people in healthcare consulting will know them, people in healthcare or consulting may know them, no one else will.

Hi guys, any thoughts on Frankel Group vs. Health Advances? Both are life sciences consulting firms in NY/BOS area. Just looking for healthcare consulting threads where there might be less bias, and hoping people might be able to offer a perspective as an industry insider.

Jumbalayaman--they strike me as similar companies (boutique life sciences consulting firms doing more or less the same thing, and with similar "street cred"). Have you met or interviewed with both? Do you have offers in hand? At this point I'd go with the company based on culture and fit.

Another consideration is location. Health Advances is in Weston... which is a suburb not easily accessible by public transportation. You'd have to buy a car. Frankel is both in NYC as well as Cambridge (which is "cooler" for a younger individual and accessible by the T).

I've had friends who worked at Frankel and liked the work and culture. I don't know anyone at Health Advances.
