I heard good things about stranger things from a few folks, but I haven't watched personally. It seems to be well acclaimed so something good for a rainy day I imagine. Have you already gone through Breaking Bad/walking dead?

Tangentially, if you're looking for a hilarious and easy watch, I'd recommend Blue Mountain State :P

There's a closer meaning to my user name. Try reading it quickly. Perhaps you will then understand ;P

I hated Sneaky Pete, which is a shame because it was a fun premise. But tons of unbelievable moments. Like, the dude spent some time in prison and none of his family can tell it's not the same guy anymore? That's crazy. Dudes are chasing him and he ducks behind a corner and they all run the other way like in a fucking Bugs Bunny cartoon? Fuck outa here

ostrich here are my picks (in no particular order):

1.) Mad Men - Some of the best acting, dialogue, and overall best period drama I have ever seen. It may take two tries but its worth pushing through till the end. In short its about a Creative Director at a Madison Avenue Ad agency during the 1960s interwoven with real-world situations and complex characters.

2.) The Newsroom - Only three seasons and stars the guy from Dumb & Dumber (Daniels?) who plays a famous news anchor and showcases real events that occurred but from a news station (think CNN, CNBC, etc.) point of view. Highly recommended for the witty dialogue and humor.

3.) House of Cards - Its unfortunate that because of the scandal surrounding Spacey this show won't conclude...I still recommend it. Based on a British TV show with the same premise and title it follows Frank Underwood a man who would scare the shit out of Machiavelli. Great acting and dialogue as well.

4.) Fear of the Walking Dead - Better than The Walking Dead as it takes you from pre-zombie apocalypse to post and you get to see the downfall of society that other dramas regarding zombies don't show.

5.) Homeland - One of my favorite and I can't believe it took me this long to watch it. Great show to binge watch as the latest season ended earlier this year. The show evolves around a CIA operative/analyst that is bipolar and batshit insane yet brilliant at what she does. Highly recommend this series and worth powering through.

6.) The Twilight Zone - (Watch the 1960s series) Simply the best anthology series to ever hit television. Rod Serling is a classy man who narrates different stories that deal with the issues of the 1960s such as Communism, Aliens, etc.

7.) Black Mirror - Similar to The Twilight Zone but revolves around technology and its impact on society. Must watch no matter how weird or screwed up you think it is.

This is a solid list.

To this I'd add Narcos, as it really is very well done, Ray Donovan, which I still think is one of the best shows on TV, and Boardwalk Empire, which is stunningly good.

Of course all of this is moot if you haven't seen the first season of True Detective, which is one of the finer things that's ever been committed to film or digital media. An immediate must-watch.

After positing I realized I left a few other shows off that I enjoyed (but others mentioned). I enjoyed Narcos as I knew the backstory of Pablo Escobar and Wagner Moura (guy who plays Pablo Escobar) is a very good Brazilian actor famous for his work in Tropa de Elite (The Elite Squad) and its subsequent sequel which I HIGHLY recommend.

True Detective bored the hell out of me and was way too slow hence why I lost interest despite all the high praise it received. I haven't seen Ray Donovan but from people who watch it I've heard its gone downhill.

Boardwalk Empire was another show I wanted to get into but found boring and way too slow. Also the main character (forgot his name) creeped me out.

The Wire is another show where I enjoyed individual clips and certain characters but found to be slow and boring at times and struggled to finish Season 1 but may take it up as I've heard HBO remastered and re-released it.

Still need to watch The Sopranos but I've realized some of these shows haven't aged well and if you didn't watch it when it came out it may be difficult to get back into it IMO.

I'm on the 6th or so episode of the 1st season of Mad Men. I'm having trouble getting into it - not really seeing a point to the whole show or a center conflict other than a few character problems. Does the show pick up?

Yes it does! For me I had to watch the entire show twice but what I found to be helpful is reading the Wiki articles and trying to understand the jokes and historical contexts of what was happening around the time period or that specific episode.

Keep going and you'll start to paint an image of the characters and you'll see how they evolve throughout the seasons.

Somehow have already forgotten about it, good call. Amazing that with all the info overload these days, you forget even stunningly good/bad/important things so soon after they happen or were experienced.

Completely pointless when you could be using that time doing something productive like making money or picking up a skill. Read the description or related news of some popular shows so you have something to say when others bring them up.

My favorite shows are as follows: (I would recommend them all if you haven't yet seem them)

Sopranos: Probably the best show ever made The Wire: The actual best show ever made Entourage: Everyone likes the idea of hangin' with your boys 24/7 getting into debauchery The Newsroom: Someone else mentioned this above, but it needs to be reiterated, great show. The Americans: Not primetime television like HBO, which I think hurts dialogue, but seriously a great show loosely based on the USSR's Illegals program during the Cold War.

Honorable mention:

Deadwood: I love the old west, this show I think captures much of what Hollywood got wrong about the old west, how nasty and straight up ruthless many of the people were.

I went through the thread and most shows are covered, I want to add a caveat though, stay away from anything on network TV/ USA. While shows like Suits/ White Collar and Designated Survivor can be interesting, there is just way too much good TV to spend a significant amount of time on those. I will try and mention shows that somehow people neglected to cite, I see alot of great content from FX missing, which I think is second only to HBO in quality shows (NFLX has alot of quality but also alot of nonsense).

FX

  • Fargo (the best show on TV right now IMO)
  • Atlanta (outstanding comedy, might be the best on TV if Rick and Morty didn't exist)
  • American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ (dramatization of the famous murder case, FX is doing an American Crime Story on the assassination of Gianni Versace next)
  • Legion (a superhero show starring the son of Professor Xavier, an amazing watch)
  • The Shield (The Wire is the best cop show ever but this is definitely second)

AMC

  • Turn: Washington's Spies (about spies during the American Revolution, great show)

Hulu

  • Handmaid's Tale (who doesn't like a dystopian future?)

NFLX

  • Orange is the new black (chics in medium security prison, funny and dramatic, first 3 seasons or so are far better than the last few)
  • Alias Grace (a chic is wrongly - or not wrongly - imprisoned for murder, a pyschologist is there to find out, based on a book written by the same author as who wrote Handmaids tale, Margaret Atwood)
  • Mindhunter ( a period drama that details the FBIs first attempts at true profiling of serial killers, haven't gotten that deep into it but interesting thus far)
  • Daredevil (part of NFLX marvel deal, based on the popular superhero, high on action and martial arts as you would expect)
  • Jessica Jones (part of NFLX marvel deal, based on the superhero, a noir style show)

These are all where the shows originally aired, you will find some/many of these shows on the traditional streaming platforms (NFLX, Hulu, AMZN) as well.

Decided to get back into Vikings. I quit for like 8 months after Ragnar died. Figured show was over. Glad I did! I have two episodes in Season 4. It's very good! The savagery did not die with Ragnar!

Try American Vandal on Netflix. The show is actually written pretty well despite its ridiculous premise. It is probably one of the funniest shows I've seen in a while.
