High School Student - Where to Apply?
Hi everyone - neighbor is going into their junior year in HS and I've been mentoring him over the years. He's got a 3.6 (can get up to 3.8 by senior year hopefully), will probably get around a 1300 on SAT, doesn't have much extracurricular or volunteer experience, and is wanting to go into business (doesn't know what yet).
Anyway, he wants to know where they should apply. I gave him a basic list of schools and was hoping to get some feedback as well as some more recommendations as to where to apply:
UT Austin
SMU
IU
Santa Clara
Penn State
UIUC
Ranking IMO: UT, UIUC, PSU, IU. All have well-regarded undergrad business programs and are good enough schools that students could major in another discipline if the business school isn't the right fit. Wisconsin would be on par with the other four schools, too.
Depending on location and cost, they could also consider other schools like Miami (OH), George Washington, Clemson, Pitt, UC Irvine, Washington, Villanova, Colorado.
Can't really speak to Santa Clara or SMU since those usually attract and place students more locally.
FWIW, some advice to pass along when they do end up going off to undergrad: grades and extra-curricular activities matter more than you'd think in college; employers still ask about grades post-college, and career-oriented clubs (student consulting/investing, mentoring, ect) look good on resumes come junior-senior year when you'll want to impress companies.
