How difficult is it to get into Deloitte Monitor O&S and PwC Strategy consulting?

How difficult do you think it is to get into either of them? And how do they compare with each other in terms of competitiveness and pay/prospects?

and also, any thoughts on PwC management consulting?

I was wondering if it 'easier' to get in for that than strategy and if so, what is likelihood of transferring to strategy from management consulting later on in one's career?

I should say, I am referring to the UK

Deloitte S&O is more highly regarded and competitive than PwC S&, but I would say it is easier to get into S&O? (Based on personal experiences), especially since PwC S& is more selective. If I am not wrong, S& pays more.

PwC MC is definitely one of lower-tier Big 4 (tier 3 and below), especially with how they messed up the Oscars. Even KMPG/EY might be better.

On your second point, definitely super easy to get in, and a transfer (from MC to Strat) is highly unlikely, unless you've been networking in MC. If you were talking about Strat to MC, I don't see why you would do that, but it shouldn't be an issue.

What do other monkeys think? :)

Monitor might be roughly equivalent or slightly harder to get into than S&... but honestly it's just splitting hairs at this point. Just try to get what you can get.

Financial Advisory is a completely separate practice from Consulting/S&O/Strategy. It includes stuff like financial due diligence, risk consulting, and corporate finance (i.e. IBD) departments. Where you exit into depends on exactly which department you're in. corporate finance can lateral into IBs or do some smaller scale PEs or corp dev. FDD has similar exits but more likely to go into corp dev. Risk consulting is relatively specialised.

Lol just saying, the Oscars were handled by PwC's audit practice.

Also worth mentioning from what I've seen with Big 4's (through the transactions I've worked on), that there are pretty well-enforced chinese walls between practices like TAS / Audit / Consulting / Corpfin

Deloitte Monitor to my knowledge has started recruiting separately to S&O. S&O would arguably be comparable to something in between PwC MC and PwC S&. Monitor would arguably be better if not on the same level as S&.

PwC MC is very much focused on implementation consulting. I have met a lot of people who joined either of these firms wanting to transfer into Strategy from standard MC-work. It all depends on your network and if your a individual that can exceed expectations when it comes to performance reviews.

For Deloitte generally you will be a generalist for your first few years, Then depending on your reviews that will determine how much say in terms of what projects you want to specialize in e.g. Strategy or M&A Ops DD.

PwC unfortunately niches you at the beginning, and I've only come across one or two who have moved to the S& side of things. That was more by networking getting staffed on S& projects and doing a really good job.

If the firm itself won't let you transition there's a pretty good chance a competitor will. It's not easy either way and it's easier just straight recruiting for a strategy role out of undergrad/postgrad.

Quand on veut, on peut.

I thought S&O and Monitor are not separate. Like, there aren't S&O roles which aren't part of Monitor, at least not that I can see when I search for grad jobs in the UK.

I'm from the UK, if you had to pick which one is harder/easier to get into, which would it be, S&O at Monitor Deloitte or PwC Strategy?

Do you think PwC MC would be good for going into technology later on in your career though? Possibly even more technical work?

Sorry I had written that before you had written you were based in the UK. PwC Strategy& operates differently to PwC here in the US.

It's a very well regarded shop and I would say definitely above Deloitte S&O in the UK. PwC itself is very well regarded of the B4 in the UK itself, if not at the top.

PwC S& > Deloitte S&O > PwC MC. I say that if Deloitte hold it's generalist model, as it can be hard in the UK to switch out of the industry vertical you get aligned.

When you say Technology, what do you mean exactly? I would look at both PwC/Deloitte & Accentures Digital consulting and Technology consulting roles instead. Perhaps that might give you the benefits of consulting and help segue in technology after? PwC MC you could find yourself in alot of systems implementation e.g. SAAS/Oracle/ERP/Workday if thats what your talking about when you say technology.

You would be correct with the Monitor branding in the UK.

In regards to FAS it's a different shop. FAS in Deloitte would generally cover Infrastructure Advisory and a few other "Finance" focused specializations like Business Modelling for instance. Consulting is unfortunately a very broad term.

E.g. in Infastructure Advisory you would be doing work for example working on the sale of a Port by the governement to private investors, or alot of Public-Private-partnerships for infastructure. It's quite different to standard consulting and sometimes more exciting! (Depending on what you like)

Just interned at S& and will just offer some thoughts. I definitely think PwC's consulting model is different that Deloitte's and this can affect your career.

You'll do more strategy work at S& but would have more flexibility as a generalist at S&O. PwC MC does implementation work and is considered a "lower-tier" in prestige but many of those folks still exit to great opportunities. I'd say S& and S&O are both very selective. S& only really hires from a small list of schools, and it's hard to break-in if you don't go to one of those targets. I think S&O hires from far more schools and more people in general, but they also probably get more applicants overall. So in conclusion, both are hard to get into and if you go to a S& target it's probably easier to get into S&, if not it's probably easier to get into S&O.

Also, I wouldn't bet on a PwC MC to S& transfer. My understanding is that this is nearly impossible.

Thanks. What sort of exit opportunities are there for PwC MC?

Say if I want to go into technology or IT later on, would PwC MC be better than Strategy consulting?

How do you know if your uni is a target from PwC? If they visit your uni campus and host events, does that mean it's a target?

Also am I right in thinking S&O and Monitor are effectively the same at Deloitte?

and strategy at PwC is the same as S&? so there's no separate strategy department
