How Do You Get an Off-Cycle Internship at a BB?

I was browsing through LinkedIn, looking at alumni and current students for potential schools i'll be transferring to this fall - and saw a handful of off-cycle "IBD Fall Analyst Intern" or "IBD Spring Analyst Intern" positions held.

I have heard that since BB's are so institutionalized, that it is near-impossible to get recruited off-cycle; regardless of your network. Is this just a case of a super strong connection with an MD or can you really network your way into these roles?

The roles are in DC/NYC.

A lot of these students have connections.

Some schools like Dartmouth have a J term for winter positions.

I don't know how it works in US, but I just secured my OC in a tier 1 BB and I did the assessment center for other 2 of them (tier 2) in Europe. From what I heard, they receive tons of application and often from strong profiles , and they hire literally a couple of people. Having said that, I believe you should network intensively and for long time, preferably with Associates or VPs, because they know better the recruiting needs for their team and they have stronger connections within bank itself, and they can push your Cv to other colleagues as well. Usually, when they hire OC interns is because they have a real need for help, thus they want someone that is able to offer good outputs from day 1, and a strong reference definitely helps in this case.

was it a French/German bank?

No, American

At BB this is basically impossible, except for strong connections.

But do you know how many boutiques there are in NYC who a) want free / semi-free labor and b) would feel flattered to have you chasing them down? Hustle man. Make 100 cold calls and you'll get a few hits at least.

I know some of the Euro banks/boutiques do off-cycle/long-term internships. Check those out.

Apr 13, 2018

Thanks Mezz. You mean the Euro-based banks in the U.S., and not the Euro banks in Europe?

And if I want to get such offer, when should I start contacting people and asking for interview? Now or after Feb?

Hi, I know this is almost a year old post. But I was wondering what you ended up doing? I am also currently looking for off-cycle internships, and not sure where exactly to start.

Target schools with trimester schedules, like Dartmouth, have established recruiting programs at some banks allowing winter internships and the like. Very hard to get into without being at a school like that
