Sublet a place. 2k should be more than plenty imo. 30 min commute really depends on what type of commute you'll be taking. Do you have to take the subway to get to work or is it just walking? If you do have to take the subway, do you have to transfer to another line? etc.

Highly recommend a commute where you just have to take one line - MTA is notoriously unreliable (as you may already know).

i'd say if you don't have any loans to pay off highly recommend getting your own place that is close to your work (10-15 min subway or walk) as a first-year; you already have enough stress from work, paying an extra 300-500 bucks per month to not deal with roommates and the hassle of transportation after a late night is worth it.

also bringing bitches back to your own place after a night out  >> roommates + 30 mins from apt outside of lower manhattan yikes

Plenty of cheap places on Craiglist/Zillow to rent month to month. I spent $1700 for a shared space (had one roommate) and was right next to the office I worked at. Cannot preach enough about helpful it is to be close to your office. When you get off at 2am, you're not going to want to make a 20-30 minute commute. You should be looking to live near your office for convenience, even if you have to pay a little more.
