How to develop critical thinking ability

I answer too quickly during interviews, blurt out things rather. I know I should think before answering, but mostly fail to do so, the end result being that the answers I give don't seem to be structured well.

How do I develop thinking on my feet ability and answer questions which are being asked rather than just blurting some nonsense? Are there any good frameworks for structuring interview answers?

How do you all go about this?

Best Response

STAR method - Situation, Task, Action, Result/Resolution

That helps for behavioral interviews. For technical questions, memorize steps until you can comfortably describe them.

Other than that, practice. You need to have scripts in your head that you can access that are already structured in a way you need-don't try to make it up on the fly. Read as many interview guides as you can, and format the best responses to fit your own experiences. Conversation is something we don't actively think to practice but it's a skill that can be developed, same as any other.

STAR method - Situation, Task, Action, Result/Resolution

That helps for behavioral interviews. For technical questions, memorize steps until you can comfortably describe them.

The STAR method is always a winner and helps the interviewer understand in easy to follow steps what exactly you did. As for the bold I would recommend finding someone who comes from a non-Finance or non-Banking background and have them ask questions.

If they can understand the gist of what you're saying you're on the right track. If not you may be falling into the trap of simply regurgitating what's stated in a textbook or interview guide.

Take a breathe and think before you speak in everyday life / give constructive responses. Read tons of books about business strategy / finance like competition demystified and do a ton of mock interviews. Practice as mentioned above will help a ton - once you have been asked most types of questions. You will have a better sense of how to respond.

Consciously talk your mind through daily tasks in your head (or even out loud). It will train your brain to be more fluid in going through explanations and observations, so when you exercise that ability verbally, your brain allows you to deliver information effortlessly.

If you find yourself feeling lost, go climb a mountain.
