How to transition to Associate From Analyst

Hi everyone,

How does an Analyst prepare for Associate role?

I am a 2nd year Analyst (1.5 years in PE) and I am paired with an Investment Manager on deals. Normally, she does financial modelling and and usually gives basic excel and PowerPoint work to me.

I understand an Associate needs to know financial modelling well but I am not given the opportunity to do financial modelling.

So, how do I practice financial modelling or show seniors that I can do financial modelling? She is very specific and likes her way regarding financial modelling so I feel she won't appreciate my contribution to financial modelling.

Many thanks in advance!

Have you given your associate any reason not to trust you around a model? If not, the associate you’re speaking of isn’t ready to become a VP and manage juniors. Being a good people/process manager isn’t given to everyone. If I were in your shoes, I’d try having a conversation with her about your involvement in models and discuss your desire for increased exposure to financial modelling. The risk is that in one year, you’re not better at modelling and you try moving to another fund because this one isn’t giving you opportunities for growth but you can’t have a solid conversation with headhunters/other funds about your modelling experience because you have none.
