I brought up Wolf of Wall Street in my interview
The associate asked why I would prefer to be in investment banking instead of wealth management (I have an offer at a WM / FP firm). My answer started with me wanting to make money move not just talk about it. This led me into talking about watching wolf of Wall Street and the big short in college and being inspired to go into a more demanding financial role. Now this dude probably thinks I just wanna be the next Jordan Belfort. I feel like this is almost as bad as saying you want to be in investment banking for the money
This is probably the worst possible thing you could say in an interview short of saying you just slept with the MD’s wife.
He could've mentioned American Pyscho. Then the interviewer would think hes a violent sociopath AND greedy instead of just greedy.
We aren't supposed to say that?
Depending on how much hell the MD gave the said Associate, sleeping with the MD’s wife may be viewed favourably.
You really said you want to "make money move, not just talk about it"?
Whyd this make me think of Cardi B "Look I don't dance now, I make moooney moves"
Interviewer: "So, why IB?"
OP: "I want them red bottoms, I make money moves"
*calmly takes sip of water*
Ironically wealth managers actually make money move by investing and bankers just talk about it.
The good news is that you might just get hired to be the jackass of the bullpen.
Bro…tell me you’re trolling
I said something like that during one of my first interview as a freshman at non target. I thought IB = Jordan Belfort.
Would be surprised if you got the offer after saying that. If you knew that was as bad as saying you’re in for the money, why did you say it?
I would appreciate the candor of a recruit who said he wanted to do banking for the money (that's why we all do it). I would ding the fuck out of you for the Wolf of Wall Street answer - about nothing else you could have said to make me want to work w/ you less.
Jordan Belfort was not even in investment banking which is the funniest part
Belford was in
S&T - Scamming and Taking
Didn’t he run an IPO tho?
no need to hate on S&T
Could have taken it to next level. Strippers, elevator sex, secretary getting breast implant for bonus, etc etc
No half measures!
I’m really confused - if anything, Belfort and Stratton were closer to WM / FP than IB aside from their random Steve Madden IPO.
Still brokerage for the Steve Madden IPO. They were selling IPO shares to their clients.
Probably have a second shot at a decent “why” in your thank you note
"I misspoke earlier today when I mentioned The Big Short and Wolf of Wall Street as my reasons for wanting to join IB. I meant to include American Psycho as well."
Honestly OP just wants to fit in
.
If you reference 1) Wolf of Wall Street 2) the Big Short and 3) making money move in your interview for investment baking, then you have no idea what investment banking really is.
This has to be satire?
No one educated enough to go into these positions would reference a drug fueled/ fraud film?
If you don't think there are idiots who manage to land IB interviews, you are sadly mistaken sir.
It's okay man, I used to bring up the movie American Psycho in my interviews. I got offers anyway, I think the mild autism it displayed made me endearing / non-threatening, which are ideal ANALyst qualities.
I was in a capital markets interview. I was so nervous in the final round that when the interviewer asked me to name a stock I DIDN'T like (short on it), I could not name a single company. I was so embarrassed the rest of the interview felt like a farce and was just going through the motions. Bad interviews happen just have to take it on the chin and learn from it.
Did it go like this?? LOL
