I have a one week internship. Now what?
Hey all.
Undergrad student at an Ivy double majoring in finance and mathematics. I have achieved the cold emailing dream, and secured work experience for a notable hedge fund. However, this is only for one week. I asked if they could give me more and they said they could only offer that much to me.
I'm still happy I secured something, but still feeling kind of down it isn't for at least a month. This internship doesn't start until January (their earliest date available).
So what do I do now? I'm still cold emailing more firms, hoping to secure something on top of that, but so far no success. Let's suppose I am unable to find something, would a one week internship be enough to help me secure a grad role in finance (if not hedge fund, some sort of Asset Management firm would do in the meantime)?
Most recruiters won't see that as an internship. Better to get something more solid.
This is a good start. People pad their resume all the time with "externships" that are a day long. Some are even a couple hours long. Use your one week to your advantage. Good luck.
Regardless, it will act as a resume build. I would continue the cold email grind. Although tedious, it seems to have worked for you. Cheers and best of luck.
I'm in the industry. It would be a conversation starter, but definitely not long enough unfortunately. Your best bet is to continuing cold emailing much smaller funds -- not the notable ones -- and offer to work for them for free. Even then, that will still be a challenge but I think you will have more success going down that path.
One week internship, interview coming up (Originally Posted: 01/16/2013)
Hello,
I have an interview scheduled not long from now. The interview is for a 7 day "Spring" internship at one of the major investment banks. Having said that, I am obviously still in university, some years from completely finishing my education, therefore it is not expected of me to have industry experience. The interview will be "competency based".
What do you think I should expect from this interview? Given that it is "competency-based", what questions will I face?
I understand that I will need to discuss scenarios in my life where I have "led a team" or "shown ability to deal with a crisis" and so on. Could anyone with experience and/or knowledge give me some more concrete expectations?
Definitely the "big four" questions. Know them cold. Besides that, please use the search function.
Thank you for the response.
What exactly are the "big four" questions?

We're getting a new intern in on Monday 11th but it's more "work experience" as it's only a week long. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can get him to do? He's just left school and is heading to university in September.
I've never heard of anything like that. Get coffee and make copies?
Ahhh, I've had experience with these type of super bullshit internships. Pretty much bring him some documents to read, spread it out. Or you tell him to do industry research- like research the car industry... essentially do whatever you want or as much as you want. Or as CaliCarry81 stated tell him to make coffee or copies (but this intern may not be experienced at either of these functions and it may simply be easier for you to do the previous two suggestions) And then its over. Good luck!
