IB Lateral Process - are Headhunters helpful?
Hey all -
For those of you who have successfully lateraled or have seen a lateral hire at your respective firms, would appreciate any insight into the process. For reference, current An1 on the West Coast looking to make a move to NY. At a solid BB/EB so should be minimal issues moving up market.
Specifically, are there legitimate headhunters that recruit for lateral positions or is the vast majority of successful moves accomplished through connections / networking?
Many thanks.
All BBs have their own HR/talent recruitment team so they won’t be wasting their money on HHs same for all the EBs. Smaller shops like Lion Tree, Allen & Co., Dyal use HH
Yeah I remember seeing Dyal via HH too. Any idea who LionTree/Allen uses? Would have loved to see these opps back when I was looking to lateral lol
Assuming those above mentioned shops aren't recruiting for laterals right now, correct?
you don’t want to work for dyal lol
I heard Selby Jennings was best on the street. Holler at them.
Negative. They will make false promises about placing you and being your friend to only turn around and call a thousand other hopeful laterals in essence forgetting who you are in the first place...
Pinpoint is terrible too. I think I finally got them to take me off their list.
Please tell us how. I've asked them 10 times and they keep e-mailing.
I used headhunters when I tried to lateral and they had contacts at many true MMs (like Piper, Blair, Jefferies--not RBC/Wells, etc), some EBs, and boutiques.
May I ask which ones were legitimate? Biggest fear is having my resume blasted across the street.
TD Newland
What specific firms had the MM connections? Also did you find that getting introduced by a HH had better worse or equal impact on your chances as opposed to networking yourself?
Many firms have their own internal lateral recruiting teams. Right now though, it's my understanding that almost all laterals are shut down aside from RX jobs.
No name boutique looking to lateral now - were you successful? Any insight on the process and interviews, case studies, modeling tests would be extremely helpful
Any options besides Selby Jennings?
Bump
2 selby Jennings people ghosted me after reaching out first but another was great to work with and got me a BB M&A offer
Received three offers through headhunters, would certainly say that they are helpful. All from UMM banks.
And you’ve only been on the desk a few months?
No, I have c. 6 months of internship and a year of analyst exp. Offers were for AN2
