Invited to lunch - what to wear
So a Chicago based prop trading startup has come to my university town in the UK and is has a few networking opportunities lined up - I'll be joining them for lunch at a nice, reasonably posh pub.
What should I be wearing? Shirt and chinos/khakis or more smart?
If they will be giving presentations etc first and lunch is on a second day or something I'd see what they wear and go from there/mimic that (or dress more formally, not less).
Can't really go wrong with a suit without a tie and a tie in your pocket just in case
They have a dinner on the day before but that's it. Short of turning up to stalk from outside, I can't be sure on what they're wearing. Thanks for the advice - any more would be appreciated
definitely suit
I would go suit to be safe - wear a tie and remove it if you feel the need to.
For a dinner I would wear a suit and tie for sure. For lunch, depends on where it is. Given the nature of prop traders, I would say that wearing a suit and button down without a tie should suffice and shows respect/preparedness. Thats just my take. Ask your career counseling center.
Thanks for the advice. For what it's worth, I wore suit without tie and the guy from the firm wore chinos and a t-shirt. Nonetheless, didn't feel particularly uncomfortable (took the jacket off as I sat down).
As it should be. I always tell people not to apologize for being overdressed. It is easy to slide off a jacket or remove a tie, it is impossible to get them out of thin air if you are in need.
