Is it disadvantageous to intern overseas?

I just finished my second year at Umich (non-Ross) and I will be interning at a small venture capital firm and a joint venture asset management firm in Seoul, South Korea over the summer. While I'm technically not an international student, my family lives in Seoul and I've been here since the start of the pandemic.

I'm quite concerned if interning in Asia instead of America would raise questions about my resume and if recruiters will recognize the projects I'd be working on during the summer, especially considering how the firms I'd be working in are not branches of global companies, but instead local firms.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

It would depend how you can sell this to your next employer and how the overall optics are.
Local companies abroad are not known in the domestic market, especially not compared to BB gigs.
Then, you mention you are technically not an international student. But there must be a reason why you have this cultural link to Korea, a local network, maybe even language skills? This can be seen as advantage by some, and as a disadvantage by others.

First of all, give less info about yourself, I am pretty sure everyone at Ross could understand who you are and that would not be ideal.

Regarding your question, I am an international student at a target and will be at an EB this summer so I might be able to help. I really tried to work in the US for freshmen and sophomore internships because people usually assume overseas internships are landed with family connections so that is not the best.

For your situation now I guess it is fine, it would be very hard to find an internship in the US at this time so maybe try to look and if you do not find anything good in the US do not worry.
