Is my associate a fake?
So our subject in question apparently has 3 years of bulge bracket IB experience under his belt, and we just took him on as a 1st year associate. However, he seems rather clueless on quite a few things which leads me to wonder about how legitimate his experience was -
Some highlights include:
- Uses the mouse in pretty much everything, well more like 50% of the time, in excel
- Clueless about powerpoint. Doesn't know moderate functions
- Gets super stressed out once it hits 10pm
- And here's the killler. He doesn't know how to rotate pages in PDF!
That being said, what's stopping me from calling utter bullshit on him is the fact that he does seem quite knowledgeable when you ask him questions. He's also pretty good at understanding the formulas we use in Excel. Strong attention to detail. And obviously the firm does background checks, so he can't be blatantly making stuff up on his resume right?
What do most folks think of this guy? Bear in mind a fellow analyst has worked with him recently and felt the same way. Also, not sure if it makes a difference, but he was out of work for more than a year before we hired him.
He is just not a streotype (spelling). See the final product but not how it turned into a product.
Getting stressed after 10pm, i do not find that weird. He might have a girlfriend telling him to get home after 3 years of all nighters.
Hard to fake work experience at a BB without being cought. Thats being said, if he worked as an analyst for 3 years he should be able to handle excel without a mouse and know the basics of powerpoint. But then again, if he was not an excel wiz and he has been away from banking for a year he migh have forgotten a lot of it.
Based on what you are writing, I do not think he is a fake.

Well yeah, I'm sure he actually worked at where he said he did. I'm just having some doubts about his experience there.
PK, most of what we do as an analyst is in excel and powerpoint. But his skills are like a fresh grad right out of training. it's quite funny to watch.

I know , work as an analyst myself. But I don't see how he could fake his resume, BB's do background check on their assoiciates.
assuming you are an analyst yourself...would advise to stop managing or microanalyzing him and focus on yourself...he has been out of work for more than a year and thats perhaps the reason for some of his technology issues...chill
Is it really that unheard of that someone might not know something really simple? Maybe he didn't do a lot of work with PDF's. Who knows. Associates are not hired to be masters at excel like analysts are. They are supposed to know their shit, but they are looking at a much different picture at their level.
My advice, help the guy out and stop worrying. He is not a fraud and is intelligent. Calling him out will jeopardize your career way more than his.

Anthony, you're missing the point. This guy is not a fresh B-school hire, nor someone who has never worked as an analyst before. Following 3 years in BB, I will be extremely surprised if you don't know simple shit like that.

So this guy has his UG (probably from a good school), worked in a BB for 3 years, did well enough to go to a good enough B school to get an Associate position, and on top of that you say he at the very least understands whats going on, correct? That is leading me to the assumption that he isn't a moron.
Maybe this guy worked in a different function at a BB. Was he an analyst or something? He could of done marketing and then went to Bschool to do banking, I don't know. All I DO know is if you call him out and you are wrong you are done at that bank. Flat out.
My advice, worry about yourself. Don't forget the food chain. He is an Associate, hired because he will probably stay with the bank and hopefully move up to VP. You are an excel monkey, gone in 2 years. I would think twice about shitting on your superiors in an extremely disrespectful way. You're not talking to some 21 year old kid who jerks off to excel. You are basically calling into question the competency of a grown man and professional.
