Is Selby Jennings legit or nah
I see a bunch of job posting from them on linkedin etc. but they always struck me as being kind of scammy like pinpoint etc. Are any of their jobs real / are they worth engaging with or should they just be ignored?

Stay far away from Selby Jennings. These reading off the script salesman advertise jobs that are verbalized and not even officially open then share your resume without your consent...
Nah
Complete trash
Stay far far far far far away. They will waste your time.
They've actually said the words "elite boutique" to me over the phone.
Y-I-K-E-S
They love spraying it on their job descriptions too. Amateurs.
Stay away. Super low quality headhunters.
They are not the best, them along with a few others are pretty bad. The things to watch out for (and things I’ve seen):
1) fishing for general information: how is performance at the fund? Do you know X? Oh is X still there working on Y project? Who is the head of that group again?
2) fishing for comp info: we have some great roles, how much do you make we want to make sure it aligns? How much do the more junior people make?
3) bait and switch: we have relationships with citadel, Millenium, DE Shaw, etc would it be ok if I talk with these funds and those like them to see if there is a fit? I have several of contacts send me over your resume to make sure it works. Etc
it is surprising that this happens at senior levels. I spoke to a recruiter (not at this exact firm) where he was using all the shitty sales tactics and kept claiming he could get me a lot of money (I forced him to say the number first, it wasn’t a lot). I told him he could come back with real jobs at top places, if he could do that I would chat, if he came back with a crappy firm I’d make sure my connections would know about the tactics, never heard from him again.
force them to give you real info and do not give up info. The good HH will be able to have those conversations with you.
They are low quality and annoying, but they do also have legit opportunities. So, it may be worth engaging on a selective basis. This is especially true if you are looking to lateral into IB. Not sure they are legit at all in buy-side stuff.
Have experience with them on legit opportunities, though didn't find them to be stellar. YMMV significantly based on the recruiter and location.
Never spoken to them but I know they have a few legit MM IB clients (meaning they help out people lateraling from a no-name bank to a MM). No idea what kind of opportunities they present on the buyside though
Speaking on their commods/energy team - same as above, generally worthless and waste of time
Just had a call with an SJ recruiter a few moments ago and all of these comments seem true.
I shot them over my resume and named some of the firms that I am currently interviewing with.
Will they reach out to these firms and drop my name? How professional are these people?
These comments actually make me a bit nervous.
Please advise.
Why would you tell them the firms you are interviewing with?
Yes, they will probably try to reach out to those firms and try to pitch some prospects. Remember, they get commission + other bonuses for every client they are able to find a job for.
You don't owe a recruiter anything. Give them as little information as possible except for the following: salary and bonus you want, role you want, y/n if you are interested, and that's it.
This
I have used SJ, actively using them rn for a lateral, but I would never overshare anything with a recruiter, especially other hiring processes you are involved.
1.They don't get paid if you take another job
2. They may contact the firms to pitch candidates of their own.
I do have to say they are not as bad as everyone says, maybe it is just the employee I am working with, but he has never asked me for any salary data or about any senior bankers working at my MM.
She asked me three times and it sounded like she was trying to fact check me.
I currently have a few good opportunities on my plate so I decided to rattle off a few names.
Do you think my confidentiality will be breached? Like will my name be dropped?
I have had a handful of calls with recruiters this cycle and all of them mentioned their integrity and ask my permission first before forwarding.
All of my experience with recruiters has been great so far and this is before I learned this firm is shady.
FWIW, I know a former SJ recruiter and she said they have a library of old job descriptions they recycle to find prospects. They joke about how they still can get hundreds of responses to a Lehman Bros job description from 2004.
So what purpose do they serve? What is the business model?
