Is this a good thing...

I recently quit my IT consulting job at my BIG 4, because I got a 750 GMAT and an offer from a startup (profitable, in the growth phase) which plans on sending me internationally to do 50% consulting work and 50% pitching and roadshow work. The startup does some interesting consulting involving some complex mathematical applications to banking (consumer and retail). I quit after only 9 months of work at the BIG 4, which was my first job. I graduated from a top 20, in the upper 50% of my class.

Some have said to me that my chances for a top B school are over. I've had too many jobs and I have no commitment or ability to follow through. Others have said that if I show leadership, my chances are much improved if the company does well. The position at the startup is very safe, and the salary was much better than BIG4. My work will not be in technology implementation, but instead in interpreting the results of analysis and making recommendations. But I am not sure it was right decision...Then again no regrets, but wondering...

Your chances at a top B school are over because you took a better job nine months after undergrad? Many people have more than one job before B school, in IB it is a given that many move on after two or three years. You have at least three years to develop your career and moving to a job with more opportunity could be a great move. Work your way into greater responsibility, get great recommendations from your bosses, and don't listen to the doubters who likely have never even been on the campus of a top B school.

Please let me know who this genie you are talking to is because I want him to pick lottery numbers. Tell this clown to STFU. Your chances for Bschool are fine. Get real. Go enjoy your new job, congrats.

I have actually been told by someone (Consulting -> Top 10 MBA -> Consulting) that switching job pre-MBA won't be recommended, and he was one of the student reps in their admission committee. But the difference was the move to another firm would be lateral, same tier, doing the same thing, maybe for slightly higher salary. So there was no 'sign of progression' reason for the move, as in this case it appears.

Somebody help me out here. If you're getting started with a great start up that can work out big time for you, why are you even thinking about B-school?

b/c not everyone has the stomach for entrepreneurial risk-taking or blind optimism for this kind of move, especially in the current economic environment.

from a risk/reward perspective, mba will almost always make more sense. just read the guy's post, does he sound very otimistic or entrepreunerial? on top of that, he's a big 4 guy. not like that's a bad thing, but i'm sure you know what i am saying. and who knows if this guy is talking about the next google or next pets.com.
