JPM Market Risk Internship vs. GS SLC Possible Full Time

I have the opportunity to return to my desk as an intern doing market risk coverage for JPM this summer in NYC. The gig is basically guaranteed to become full time but entails waiting on people to move on which could mean upwards of 6 months of part-time work. On the flip side I am currently in the process of interviewing with GS in SLC for their IMD group. JPM wants a commitment within the next week or two and wanted to see if anyone had opinions on taking a guaranteed pt vs. going ft in Utah with no guaranteed at this point.

I'm up for a ft position in Utah. I was pretty heavy into skiing when I was younger so the idea of being out west doesn't bother me. The JPM job would be 40 hours per week over the summer as different members of the desk go on vacation, etc. After labor day the waiting game for a spot to open begins.
My major concerns are: 1) Letting a guaranteed offer pass me by despite the not ideal circumstances and then not getting anything 2) Financially getting by in NYC on 20 hours a week if the pt thing begins stretching out for a while, SLC is super cheap from what I've seen for housing, food, etc. 3) GS will not have their decision before I need to make my commitment about NY and it probably isn't appropriate to be interning for JPM and interviewing at GS simultaneously lol

aheltsley it probably isn't appropriate to be interning for JPM and interviewing at GS simultaneously lol

I disagree with this part. Interview with as many places as you can and choose the best offer you get. Internships are not guarantees no matter how the employer tries to spin it. You gotta maximize your options.

A couple quick questions: 1) Will it look as bad as it sounds to sign the offer letter, start the internship and half way through the summer find out I need to start full time ASAP meaning I leave earlier than my commitment? 2) If I need to go for another round of interviews once I start in NY how would you go about asking to leave NYC for an interview in Utah?

I would never decline an offer for a possible offer. Dont waste it.

1) Others may disagree with me, but don't quit an internship midway in order to start another job. Not a good way of conducting business, and i'm sure you can figure something out with GS if it comes to that.

2) I would ask GS to postpone any on-site interviews to a later date. If they cannot, I don't see a good way for you to skip work to attend an interview. Unless you know your manager on a personal level or you spin it somehow, it would be next to impossible.

It really sounds like you have a decent thing going with JPM. They obviously like you because they invited you back with a possible full time offer. Also, you've already developed a relationship with them, so getting into a complicated situation over these two jobs may not be worth the trouble. If you don't handle this correctly, the situation may even blow up in your face ending in burned bridges and no job.
I'd say that the ball is in GS's court now, and they should either give you an answer now, or wait for you until the end of the summer.

I graduate in two weeks...I would assume that they still are recruiting or I wouldn't have interview's scheduled... I put my application in a while ago and only recently got called back (less than two weeks ago).
