Live in Manhattan or commute?

Incoming first-year IB analyst here wondering about where to live- do analysts typically live in the city closer to the office or do they commute from another borough?

Any insight as to which one makes the most sense?

Really bad advice...Live in NYC for the commute + your social life. This living in a different borough/state thing is really dumb for a lot of reasons.

if your office is in midtown, I'd shoot for a place in Long island city (1-2 train stops into the city), might be cheaper.

If your office is in Fidi, maybe try downtown brooklyn (still pretty close to the city)

I don't know why people promote commuting.  It baffles my mind.  What is most important in your early career is performance.  Sleep drives better performance.  Get a place as close to the office as possible and get as much sleep as possible.  You are in a jungle of very high performers.  A 1% difference can make an exponentially large impact on your life.
