Low GPA - HBX Core to Compensate - Are all Classes/Programs created Equal?
Hey All,
I have a low GPA (3.11) with a downward trend. No point getting into the reasons why in this post. Anyone who has read Accepted's MBA Admissions Tip: Dealing with a Low GPA knows that the most important part of mitigating a low undergraduate GPA is developing a convincing story, but when it comes to taking extra classes to bolster your academic record - I have some questions about HBS Online CORe:
-
Based on what I've read on this forum, HBX CORe seems highly regarded. However it grades classes on an augmented pass/fail structure . Would it be better to take traditional coursework where I have a shot of achieving an "A"?
-
Would M7 Adcoms consider additional coursework at HBS CORe different than traditional Accounting/Finance Coursework at MIT vs BU vs Suffolk vs UMASS Boston? Would they hold coursework at more prestigious universities in higher regard?
-
A lot of the advice I've found online seems to emphasize that "Recent" coursework is needed to offset a low GPA. Any thoughts on if there is an optimum time to take the classes? i.e., are classes taken 1 year before applying regarded higher than if taken 3 years before applying regarded?
-
I have a significant tuition reimbursement program at work (maybe enough for 4/5 individual courses). Outside of HBS CORe - are there any other beneficial courses I could take to use up the rest of my allowance?
I have a feeling I'm over analyzing this - just wondering if there are ways to optimize this aspect of my preparation.
Hi biotechnerd, any of these topics helpful:
You're welcome.
Hi there. HBX Core is highly regarded but it's not for everyone...it is expensive and the courses may not be subjects you need to show aptitude in. I've not heard your concern about their grading structure but I can see your point. If you have specific courses that would be more helpful to your career goals and/or that you want to try to "make up for" on your college transcript then taking single courses may be a better path for you. I think if a course at a more prestigious school is available/convenient for you, go for it, as it could make a slight difference. As for timing, I do think you should have at least one recent course within the year before applying, though you could take more before that and then be able to show 3 or 4 completed courses by the time you apply. Schools typically recommend Accounting, Finance, Stats, Econ though there could be other beneficial topics depending on the weaknesses in your transcript or career goals (e.g., Excel modeling, Communications). Hope that helps!
Hi Biotechnerd,
I'm glad you found Accepted's post helpful.
HBS Online's CORe is credible, especially at HBS and if you do well with it.

Thank you so much Linda - this is very helpful!
You're welcome.
One thing I forgot to mention, is your time. If you will be more likely to excel in a community college close to your home than at MIT which you will have an hour commute to, I'd go with the community college. Be practical and realistic in your choices.
Best, Linda
Dear Linda,
Would you possibly be aware of the exact requirements for obtaining the "Pass with High Honors".
Indeed: HBSOnline remains extremely vague and unclear on the subject.
