Management Consulting in Calgary, AB

Anybody in Management conluting based out of Calgary, AB....or know anything about it?

I know McKinsey has a relatively small office in Calgary, but what about Deloitte and Accenture and others? Anyone know how big the groups in Calgary are???

Also, are most of the clients for these firms' offices based in in Calgary?
I know people in other Canadian hubs (say Toronto) that travel 80% of the time. Does MC require as much travel when based out of Calgary?

What kind of salaries (with P.Eng, MBA and 5+yrs experience) can one expect to start at in Calgary vs. Toronto, let's say. I'm still unsure if we're talking pay incentives or less pay to be out West.

Any input on MC starting salaries in Canada and the other questions above would be greatly appreciated.

Thx...

As far as I know these are the firms with actual offices in Calgary: - McKinsey (looks like they amalgamated a former BCG office that didn't survive) - Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, E&Y all have consulting branches in the city - Accenture - Oliver Wyman / Mercer (not sure if OW is a full office, or collaboration with the Mercer office in Calgary) - IBM Global Business Services (?) - Alvaraz and Marsal

I'm sure other firms are working in Calgary, but these are the firms I've run into or had colleagues from / recruited to. Salaries are reasonable, although they lag O&G, O&G Services, and Retail and Investment Banking. With the exception of Investment Banking, the hours will be worse than those other industries.

It's a great city to work in, but for the money/work-life your best bet is O&G. Go into consulting if you really want to see a variety of projects and what I believe is better development than I've seen in industry.

Hi everyone!

I'm new here at WSO, and I am loving the fact that I am learning so much from the vastness of information that is being shared on this site! (I know you're not suppose to believe everything you read so I'm taking everything with a grain of salt) But thanks to everyone who does "AMA", shares their own experience, and to those who gives advice. Kudoos to you all!

I know it's a really, really, really old thread and it's also one of the few threads here in WSO that talks about Canada (who hooo!). I am a current undergraduate majoring in Accounting here in Alberta. My plan is to stick it out at one of the Big 4(doing audit) for 2 years and get my CPA/CA, and hopefully break out into one of the MBB as a BA. If that doesn't work out, i'll probably just stay at the big 4 and hope for the holy grail of internal transfer - Audit to Consulting. Now for my question:

  1. What are the chances of getting hired by MBB if I started at a big 4 doing audit?

  2. Would getting a Master of Accounting help at all, or would it be better to just do a classic MBA at one of the Universities here?

  3. What are some things/criteria does MBB look for in a candidate? How would one land an interview with them?

    • Minimum GPA?
    • Volunteer Experience?

In addition, just wondering if anyone else has recent info about current outlook of the MBB and Big 4 Consulting here in Calgary, in terms of:

  1. BA/First Year - Starting Salary.
  2. Target/Mid-target Schools in Canada.

Thanks! -W
