Managing Oily Skin
Hey guys, I don't know if others have the same issues but I hate how much my skin gets oily over time at the office. It seems like the issue comes up sporadically throughout the week; some days are definitely worse than others so I decided to research and summarize some of the findings and tips I thought were helpful:
- Routine face washing, preferably with a dedicated face wash but DO NOT use rough materials to scrub your face or it will lead to irritation
- Dry skin causes overproduction of oil so use a moisturizer after washing
- Avoid blotting papers and excessive wiping of oil off your face to avoid your body overproducing more oil to compensate
More tips an details on the points above can be found in the link below too:

Anyone got other tips to share?
Following
Use a Niacinimide serum, which helps control oil production. Naturium is my favorite and its $16.
Moisturize really. And if you are washing your face mid-day in the office, maybe try w/o face wash just with warm water (warm water will be better than cold water for removing oil but not completely dry out your skin like if you were to use face wash again), then moisturize again. And then use face wash at night and morning only. You can also try using a less intense face wash. Personally when I use a really strong face wash it makes my skin feel like a cardboard, although I’m moisturizing afterwards, it feels like the strong face wash of doing more harm than good. Let me know how this works!
Try using a moisturizer with a matte finish. I really like the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat. I wear it underneath a bit of makeup (which only makes the oiliness worse) and it’s a game changer. It’s very light and doesn’t leave a shiny residue like most moisturizers
Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
Use a towel dedicated to drying your face only. Pat dry, don't wipe. Wiping will only cause irritation. Pretty easy, but I think this could easily get overlooked.
Apply sunscreen everyday, including on overcast days. It can really protect your skin against discoloration and any redness.
I struggled with this for years and am about 18 months into a complete change on how I view skincare. most of what you're going to read will sound radical, but my wife and other females who I'm around give me compliments on my smell and skin, for whatever that's worth. the theme is LESS IS MORE. your body's oils are natural cleansers and it's what your body craves, so I take a minimalist approach to skincare and while it took my body a bit of adjusting, it's worked swimmingly. my former routine included daily face washing, daily soap, deoderant, antiperspirant, eye cream, occasional body lotion, morning showers, after shave, zit spot treatment, and occasional cologne. I would also shave daily whereas now I have a beard and aside from trimming with a buzzer, I use a DE razor to keep it tight. I would be troubled with dry skin despite living in a humid climate, random zits, and just a general discomfort of the tug of war between me wanting to smell nice with all of those chemicals on my face and the discomfort of my skin because of said chemicals.
today I do not use deoderant, antiperspirant, after shave, zit spot treatment, eye cream, or cologne. I wash my face 2-3x a week with a light soap (dr bronners), use a light, castile type soap for my body (I workout with friends and want to avoid fungus, so I tend to do it for that reason), shower at night, use natural body lotion (everyone brand) all over (head bc I'm bald, face, arms, legs, chest, etc), and rely on essential oils (art of shaving for my beard + just straight up peppermint oil) and a clean diet to smell good
what happened after a couple of weeks of adjustment is my body stopped freaking out after showers and I maintained my face's natural oil profile which was a very happy medium, since they weren't being lost in the bathing process.
I also completely disagree with the advice of daily sunscreen (https://www.outsideonline.com/health/wellness/sun-exposure-blood-pressu…). rather, I favor daily exposure to the sun in a controlled way rather than what most white and asian people do which is stay inside all year and then go to the hamptons and cook themselves over MDW. if you're a WASP, sure you can't go from being a shut in to going to Miami, but things like eating lunch outside when possible, going for weekend walks outside without sun protection, and playing sports are all good ways to build up your skins tolerance to the sun.
TLDR - I agree with the sentiment of not stripping your body of oils, but I go further. I say don't wash your face if there's not dirt on it (as in you just went for a run outside and passed by some construction sites and got dust on your face), and even though I wet my face every day, you don't need face wash to be clean. LESS IS MORE
I chug water all day. My skin is legit.
I actually have oily hair even though I thoroughly shampoo and condition my hair every night. What could be the case for that? Does anyone have any tips?
