Like it is getting ridiculous hearing these made up names for Asians... Candice, Emily, James, Annie, Chloe, Allen, Justin. I don't see other minorities making up their first name (eg Indians, Hispanics). Thing that is funny is that all these Asians end up sticking to their own habits/culture/language, so what's the point of Westernizing your first name lmao

It's not uncommon among non-western cultures.
Africans have been westernizing their names for a long time. In UK, many African people you meet will have 2 first names. Legally.
It's just that the US doesn't have many actual African 1/2nd gen immigrants so this is not well known.
It's also pretty obvious why. Westerners can have trouble with non-western names (which I think is usually laziness but that's a different discussion). Easiest way to get over this friction is to use a western name.
Some people will complain if they have a Chinese name and some will complain if they don't.
In your post OP you both complained that they integrate, then complained that they don't.
They can't win. Also calling it a 'made-up/ ridiculous' or 'faking' a name in an english-speaking country is very strange/ ignorant to say the least.
You are also overlooking a lot of other people who come to the states from countries where English isn't the first language but still give their kids english first names...Germany, France, Nordics, or any european country doesn't speak english as their first language (i.e virtually all).
If a Polish father and and a Swedish mother had a kid in New York and called the kid 'John' would you say it was a 'made-up' or a 'fake' name? No, you wouldn't.

I grew up with a weird name that everyone mispronounces. What they're doing is very smart.
OP has a valid point, not clear why there is backlash. Some of these Chinese have really ridiculous first names and it simply does not align with how they carry themselves or behave (no issues with that, you can stick to your culture but then do not pretend to portray yourself as Westernized).
In short, it is a facade.

This works both ways. When you learn Chinese you are given a Chinese name and that is the name you use when speaking mandarin. It is just part of the language learning process
