MBA for Career Switch to investment banking.
I am currently and experimental nanotechnology scientist at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. My educational background includes a PhD in Materials Science from Imperial College London. I am looking at doing an MBA with the aim of transitioning into investment banking in London, and maybe later moving to Continental Europe. I would like to ask the following:
i. Which business schools should I aim for ?
ii. Would my PhD hinter my chances of getting accepted into IB ? Or would I be able to leverage my knowledge to be considered for a semiconductor industry specific group?
iii. Would London still be a good starting place in IB ?
I swear half the time I can't tell if the people on here are trolling or not.
I'm just curious to hear why you don't want to use your PHD.
What do you mean ? I have it, it was a justified idea then, but I am thinking about my next jobs. Do you mean to ask why I will not continue in the lab ?
I thought the lab stuff was part of the PHD. but let's say you get your phd at 25. A year or two of lab work. now you are 26. You say you are looking at an MBA. so let's assume you need a year to get into a good program. 27. two years in MBA. 29. that's not impossible to break in but you are starting to get on the later end of the spectrum(not impossible to break in). I just think theres a big question on Why do you want to do Investment Banking? Do you really want to grind through late nights and all the BS for another desk job?
Well, a desk job is a natural progression from a lab job. I agree with the opportunity cost argument, but I would not want to take the engineering route either. And I don't see myself doing science either. Had I been born in a different country, I'd have aimed for IB during undergrad, but as it is things are a lot harder. But I guess if or rather when I wash out of IB I could always get another lab or teaching job in science. But I would at least try to do it, to avoid living with the failure, as it were.
At the end of the day the choice is always yours. IB is not the end all be all to a good life.
