Hey folks,
A lot of bulge bracket firms such as Goldman Sachs have their own Merchant Banking Division and I was wondering what are some advantages MBD has over IBD in terms of work, pay, exit ops, lifestyle etc.
I have a MBD interview coming up and this is my last candle burning. I'd appreciate any insight on why one would prefer to work in merchant banking versus investment banking .

Buyside vs. sell side. At Goldman particularly the hours aren't better at the analyst/associate level (especially within REPIA, those guys get killed). Same for pay and exit opportunities at the junior level, things change once you get to ED level onwards due to carry in funds and just higher bonuses if the funds perform. All in all, if you're looking to get into investing I'd recommend a mega/mid-market fund much more than GS MBD.
Anyone got any info how MBD execution compares to say an M&A Execution group at a bank or the MBD PIA group?
