Microsoft On-Site Interview
I have an on-site interview for an internship at Microsoft coming up. Their website says that they don't care what you wear, but I was under the impression that this was more for programers. Should I plan on wearing a suit?
This is for a non-finance business function (marketing/supply chain).
Any advice would be appreciated.
If they don't care what you wear, a dress shirt, slacks, and sport coat should do the trick.
Probably better to err on the safe side and suit up
If they don't care what you wear, then they shouldn't care if you wear a suit.
I'd wear a suit and maybe trash the tie if I get the sense that its extremely casual.
As a counterpoint to datphukinnewb - I also interviewed with FRP and only wore jeans and a nice sweater.
I think that the wording that I remember getting was something like "Wear whatever you're comfortable with, if a suit helps you perform better wear that. If you're more comfortable in jeans, we won't judge you."
Its a company in tech and you're in the Pacific Northwest - I personally would advise against wearing a suit. Even showing up to work in khakis felt too formal for most corporate groups during my time at MSFT.
Whenever I saw someone wearing a suit in the executive areas, you could usually assume they were from outside the company.
Yeah the wording on their website is:
"For the interviews, wear whatever makes you most comfortable. The people interviewing you are likely to be casually dressed, but we understand if you feel more confident in your power suit."
I guess my main concern was whether their business groups had different expectations as far as clothing goes.
Rule of thumb - if you are unsure about the dress code, always err on the side of over-dressing. If you find that you are over-dressed, you have the option to remove the suit/tie/loosen a button etc...
If you under-dress however, you won't have this option.
I would use this advice regardless of industry... it's just professional etiquette.
